It is the Redemptorists’ unique call to be close to those who have been cast aside by society. We have a unique history of ministering to the spiritual and material needs of those we serve.
That’s why we continue our ministries to migrant workers, continue to make a difference for Detroit’s young people through the Life Direction’s programs, and continue our food and clothing banks in Redemptorist parishes throughout the US. Please help us sustain our many ministries.

“Los más abandonados”
Los últimos siete días, el Padre Migrante está participando en la campaña “Martes de Dar” de los Redentoristas. La campaña apoya a muchos de los ministerios de los Redentoristas que sirven a los “más abandonados”. Identificar a los “más abandonados” siempre ha sido un ejercicio complicado para nuestra congregación. Está claro en nuestra Constitución 3, que nuestra preocupación es por “aquellos que nunca han escuchado el mensaje de la Iglesia, o al menos no lo reciben como la “Buena Nueva”.
El Papa Francisco observó en la Alegría del Evangelio, 200, “la peor discriminación que sufren los pobres es la falta de atención espiritual … necesitan a Dios, y no podemos dejar de ofrecerles su amistad, su bendición, su Palabra, la celebración de los Sacramentos”. Al leer esa declaración, parece que, si bien el Papa es jesuita, puede ser un discípulo de San Alfonso de Ligorio disfrazado. Durante esta terrible pandemia, en más de una ocasión tuve que ponerme en cuarentena o aislarme por estar expuesto al virus o por motivos de viaje. Una de las bendiciones de vivir en cuarentena, es que estoy leyendo otra vez la biografía de San Alfonso por Theodule Reh-Mermet.
Durante los primeros treinta y tres años de su vida, Alfonso era un hombre talentoso en muchos aspectos como estudiante, artista, músico, abogado, predicador, sacerdote dedicado y misionero que tocó al corazón de muchos. Vivió una vida austera y llegó a un momento de lo que pudo haber sido el agotamiento o incluso un colapso cuando se fue a una pequeña comunidad rural en las montañas para descansar y recuperarse. Tenía el deseo de servir a los más abandonados, pero no estaba seguro de a quién que debía servir. En Scala, encontró su llamado a servir a los pobres de las zonas rurales, a quienes identificó casi en los mismos términos que el Papa Francisco.
Continuaré reflexionando sobre la dramática conversión que tuvo lugar en Alfonso cuando fundó la Congregación Redentorista. Gracias por ayudarnos a continuar con su misión de llevar “Buenas Nuevas” a los pobres.

“The Most Abandoned”
The past seven days, Padre Migrante is participating in the “Giving Tuesday” campaign of the Redemptorists. The campaign supports many of the ministries of the Redemptorists serving the “most abandoned”. Identifying to the “most abandoned” has always been a tricky exercise for our congregation. It is clear in our Constitution 3, that our concern is for “those who have never heard the Church’s message, or at least do not receive it as the “Good News”.”
Pope Francis observed in the Joy of the Gospel, 200, “the worst discrimination which the poor suffer is the lack of spiritual care … they need God, and we must not fail to offer them his friendship, his blessing, his word, the celebration of the sacraments.“ In reading that statement, he appears that while the Pope is a Jesuit, he may be a disciple of St. Alphonsus Liguori in disguise. During this terrible pandemic, I have on more than one occasion had to quarantine or isolate myself for being exposed to the virus of for reasons of travel. One of the blessings of being able to quarantine, is that I have been rereading the biography of St. Alphonsus by Theodule Reh-Mermet.
The first thirty-three years of his life, Alphonsus was a gifted, man in many ways as a student, an artist, a musician, a lawyer, a preacher, a zealous priest, and a missionary who reached the hearts of many. He lived an austere life and came to a moment of what may have been exhaustion or even a breakdown when he went away to small rural community in the mountains for rest and recuperation. He had the desire to serve the most abandoned, but was uncertain of who that meant that he should serve. In Scala, he found his call to serve the rural poor, whom he identified in almost the same terms as Pope Francis.
I will continue reflecting on the dramatic conversion that took place in Alphonsus as he founded the Redemptorist Congregation. Thank you for helping us continue his mission to bring “Good News” to the poor.
