Building Aliances
In the second reading for Mass on Sunday, St. Paul said that we needed to “not conform with this age”. When I began my work as Director for Campesino Ministry in Fresno, I did something very important in my first week on the job. On the first day, I went to visit the United Farm Workers offices in La Paz. I wanted to introduce myself to the union. Everyone thought that was good. Later in the week, I went to visit the Nisei Farmer’s League, an association of growers to introduce myself to them. Some were surprised. If I was to work for and with the workers, I wanted a good relationship with the growers.
It is essential for farm worker ministers to look to build relationship with the growers. It can be very important in gaining access to work with the campesinos. Building such alliances came naturally in my introduction to farm worker ministry.
In 1997, I preached a parish mission in The Dalles, Oregon. Several orchard owners attended the mission and at the close of the mission they told me that I should return for the cherry harvest. They said that I could visit different orchards every day for four weeks and say Mass for their workers. When I went to The Dalles for the summer of 1998, the growers had lined up seventeen orchards for Masses. The foreman of an orchard that was not on the list, asked me to say Mass at his orchard. I told him that I needed permission from the owner. At first the owner said, “No.” The foreman persisted and my last Mass was at that orchard. The owner was gracious to me and as I was leaving, he gave me a twenty-pound box of cherries.
The following year, I asked him if I could say Mass again and he asked if I could do it earlier in the harvest. I asked, “Why?” He said that after I said Mass there were no fights and no one getting drunk for three days. He wanted to Mass earlier to get a good start on the harvest.
Building alliances in not only good ministry, it is a good witness to the faith in a time when the world needs our witness. When Paul said to “not conform to this age”, witnessing to a polarized world the possibility of forming unconventional alliances is a witness needed today. One day, I participated in a march for comprehensive immigration reform at a time when the Senate was considering a reform bill. On the march, I walked with the president of the UFW on one side of me and the Nisei Farmer’s League director on the other. We were having a pleasant visit as we walked, and I commented that they seemed quite comfortable with each other. One said, “We don’t let our work get in the way of our friendship.”
Let us build alliances in our ministry that our age cannot imagine.

Cuando comencé mi trabajo como Director del Ministerio Campesino en Fresno, hice algo muy importante en mi primera semana en el trabajo. El primer día fui a visitar las oficinas de United Farm Workers en La Paz. Quería presentarme al sindicato. Todos pensaron que eso era bueno. Más tarde en la semana, fui a visitar la Liga de agricultores de Nisei, una asociación de productores, para presentarme a ellos. Algunos se sorprendieron. Si iba a trabajar para y con los trabajadores, quería tener una buena relación con los productores.
Es esencial que los ministros campesinos busquen establecer relaciones con los agricultores. Puede ser importante para acceder al trabajo con los campesinos. La construcción de tales alianzas fue algo natural en mi introducción al ministerio campesino.
En 1997, prediqué una misión parroquial en The Dalles, Oregon. Varios propietarios de huertas asistieron a la misión y al final de la misión me dijeron que debería regresar para la cosecha de cerezas. Dijeron que podía visitar diferentes huertas todos los días durante cuatro semanas y decir misa por sus trabajadores. Cuando fui a The Dalles durante el verano de 1998, los productores habían alineado diecisiete huertas para las misas. Al año siguiente, le pregunté si podía volver a decir misa y el dueño me preguntó si podía hacerlo más temprano en la cosecha. ¿Pregunté por qué?” Dijo que después de que dije misa no hubo peleas y nadie se emborrachó durante tres días. Quería la misa temprano para empezar bien la cosecha.
Construir alianzas no solo es buen ministerio, es un buen testimonio de la fe en un momento en que el mundo necesita nuestro testimonio. Cuando Pablo dijo que “no se conforme a esta era”, ser testigo a un mundo polarizado de la posibilidad de formar alianzas no convencionales es un testimonio necesario hoy. Un día, participé en una marcha por una reforma migratoria comprensivo en un momento en que el Senado estaba considerando un proyecto de ley de reforma. En la marcha, caminé con el presidente de la UFW a un lado y el director de la Liga de Agricultores de Nisei al otro. Teníamos una visita agradable mientras caminábamos, y comenté que parecían bastante cómodos el uno con el otro. Uno dijo: “No permitimos que nuestro trabajo se interponga en nuestra amistad”.
Construyamos alianzas en nuestro ministerio que nuestra época no pueda imaginar.
