41. Lent: Semana Santa – Domingo de Ramos
Domingo de ramos
Uno de los días más fáciles del año para un predicador es el Domingo de Ramos. La liturgia compromete a los fieles durante toda la Semana Santa. Comienza con una procesión, cantando Hosannas al Señor. A medida que comienza la semana, los Apóstoles probablemente comenzaron la semana, creyendo que las temibles reflexiones que Jesús hizo antes, no podrían tener lugar después de ver a las multitudes dando la bienvenida a Jesús en Jerusalén. Días después, la multitud gritaba: “Crucifícalo”. La lectura de la Pasión es larga, pero simplemente en su proclamación, estamos listos para comenzar esta semana especial.
No olvidaré la celebración de la Semana Santa en Oaxaca. El Domingo de Ramos, la mayoría de la gente tenía una comida dominical regular con sus familias, pero durante toda la semana, nadie comía carne. No era simplemente Viernes Santo sin carne, sino todos los días hasta la fiesta después de la Vigilia Pascual. Nunca comí tanta calabaza y frijoles en una semana. Incluso las tortillas eran únicas allí. Un hombre me preguntó si quería la mitad de su tortilla. Mientras lo decía, pensé, si todo lo que estuviera comiendo fuera media tortilla, podría tener mucha hambre. Luego vi la tortilla de Oaxaca. Era del tamaño de una pizza grande y bastante espesa. La media tortilla era probablemente el equivalente a seis tortillas de tamaño normal. Entonces, comimos una tortilla, frijoles y calabaza.
Si bien todavía tenemos restricciones a causa de COVID, es bueno poder celebrar la Semana Santa este año. El año pasado fue un año perdido. Que el Domingo de Ramos comience nuestra semana, conduciendo a una Pascua bendecida.

Palm Sunday
One of the easiest days of the year for a homilist is Palm Sunday. The liturgy engages the faithful in the whole of Holy Week. It begins with a procession, singing Hosannas to the Lord. As the week begins, the Apostles probably began the week, believing that the fearful reflections that Jesus made earlier, could not take place after seeing the crowds welcoming Jesus to Jerusalem. Days later, the crowd would cry, “Crucify him.” The reading of the Passion is long, but simply in its proclamation, we are ready to begin this special week.
I will not forget celebrating Holy Week in Oaxaca. On Palm Sunday, most people had a regular Sunday meal with their families, but during the entire week, no one ate meat. It was not simply Good Friday without meat, but every day until the fiesta after the Easter Vigil Mass. I never ate so much squash and beans in one week. Even the tortillas were unique there. One day and man asked if I wanted half of his tortilla. As he said it, I thought, if all I was having was half a tortilla, it could be a very lean day. Then I saw the tortilla from Oaxaca. It was the size of a large pizza and it was quite thick. The half tortilla was probably the equivalent of six normal size tortillas. So, we had una tortilla, frijoles and calabaza.
While we still have restrictions on account of COVID, it is good to be able to celebrate Holy Week this year. Last year was a lost year. May Palm Sunday begin our week, leading to a blessed Easter.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
