“You only have the time that God gives you”: Stories, Juanita
El tema que presenté la semana pasada, “Solo tienes el tiempo que Dios te da”, se ve en algunas historias que conté anteriormente en mi serie de blogs. Deseo repetir algunas de esas historias para que puedan recordarse en este momento.
Historias de migrantes
Caminar con los migrantes ha sido una de las mayores bendiciones de mi vida como misionero. El secreto de mi compromiso en este ministerio comenzó con la apertura a la nueva evangelización promovida por un concilio ecuménico, Santos Papas, conferencias de obispos de Estados Unidos y América Latina. El Papa Juan Pablo II, dirigiéndose a la Iglesia en 1983, pidió una evangelización nueva en su “ardor, métodos y expresión”. El Papa Francisco declaró en La alegría del Evangelio que el mensaje es alegre, llamándonos a no tener una cara de vinagre.
Mi caminar con los migrantes siempre ha sido un poco no convencional. Siempre hago las cosas necesarias para preparar a las personas para recibir la gracia del sacramento. La parte poco convencional de ofrecer la Palabra y el sacramento a los pobres es hacerlo respetando la vida a las personas a quienes se dirige el ministerio. Este ministerio comienza conociendo la historia de la vida de los pobres. Durante la próxima semana o dos, este blog incluirá historias de personas que necesitan una iglesia que los acompañe. Las historias son sobre personas que necesitan que la iglesia les responda en su momento de necesidad. Si bien la persona puede tener necesidades económicas, de salud, sociológicas y emocionales, mi preocupación es que ofrezcamos atención espiritual a los pobres. Estas son las historias de personas que necesitan el ministerio del momento.

(Una historia de espontaneidad y actualidad del ministerio)
Juanita vino a mí en el segundo al último día de nuestro programa de Confirmación Campesino para preguntarme: “Padre, ¿qué necesito hacer para recibir el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo?” No era la forma normal en que una persona pide la Primera Comunión. Le dije que nuestro programa era para gente como ella, pero era el penúltimo día de clase y no podíamos aceptar gente nueva. Ella empezó a llorar. Le pedí que se sentara y me contara su historia.
Juanita explicó que su familia llegó la noche anterior y se enteró de nuestro programa por sus primos que estaban en la clase. Ella contó haber vivido en 10 ciudades diferentes en ocho años, haber ingresado tres veces a las clases de la Primera Eucaristía, pero nunca haber completado los programas. Cada vez que la familia se mudaba, tenía que empezar de nuevo. Le hice preguntas de fe. Quedó claro que estaba bien informada sobre el catolicismo. Le pregunté: “¿Cómo es que sabes tanto sobre la Iglesia?” Ella dijo: “Padre, vamos a misa los domingos. Somos católicos. Somos solo migrantes “. No había duda de que continuaría creciendo en su práctica de la fe católica. Le di la bienvenida a la clase. Cuatro días después recibió la Confirmación y la Primera Eucaristía.

The theme that I introduced last week, “You only have the time that God gives you,” is seen in a few stories that I told earlier in my series of blogs. I wish to repeat a few of those stories so that they may be remembered at this time.
Migrant Stories
Walking with migrants has been one of the greatest blessings of my life as a missionary. The secret to my engagement in this ministry began with openness to the new evangelization promoted by an ecumenical council, Popes, conferences of Bishops of the United States and Latin America. Pope John Paul II, addressing the Church in 1983, called for an evangelization that is new in its “ardor, methods and expression.” Pope Francis declared in The Joy of the Gospel that the message is joyful, urging us not to be sourpusses.
My walk with migrants has always been a bit unconventional. I always do the things required in preparing people to receive the grace of sacrament. The unconventional part of offering the Word and sacrament to the poor is doing so respecting the lives of persons for whom the ministry is directed. Such ministry begins by learning the story of the lives of the poor. For the next week or two, this blog with carry stories of people who need a church that walks with them. The stories are about people who need the church to respond to them in their moment of need. While the person may have economic, health, sociological and emotional needs, my concern is that we offer spiritual care for the poor. These are the stories of people who need ministry of the moment.

(A story of spontaneity and timeliness of ministry)
Juanita came to me on the second to the last day of our Campesino Confirmation program to ask, “Padre, what do I need to do to receive the Body and Blood of Christ?” It was not the normal way a person asks for First Communion. I told her that our program was for people like her, but it was the second to the last day of class and we could not take on new people. She began to cry. I asked her to sit down and tell me her story.
Juanita explained that her family arrived the night before and she found out about our program from her cousins who were in the class. She told of having lived in 10 different towns in eight years, having three times entered First Eucharist classes but never completed the programs. Each time the family moved, she had to begin again. I asked her questions of faith. It became clear that she was well informed on Catholicism. I asked, “How is it that you know so much about the Church?” She said, “Father, we go to Mass on Sundays. We are Catholic. We are just migrants.” There was no doubt that she would continue to grow in her practice of the Catholic faith. I welcomed her to the class. Four days later she received Confirmation and First Eucharist.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
