Teach Them
“The commemoration of the half millennium of evangelization will gain its full energy if it is a commitment, not to re-evangelize but to a New Evangelization, new in its ardor, methods and expression.” (St. John Paul II, Address to CELAM, 1983)
“Pastoral ministry seeks to abandon the complacent attitude that says: “We have always done it this way”. I invite everyone to be bold and creative in this task of rethinking the goals, structures, style and methods of evangelization in their respective communities.” (Pope Francis, EG. 33)
“They (Redemptorist missionaries) should examine whether their missionary methods need to be renewed and how this should be done. They should then retain whatever methods have proved successful, modify those which are inadequate and abandon those no longer useful.” (Redemptorist Constitutions and Statutes, n. 15)
Un sacerdote leyó las últimas palabras de Jesús a sus discípulos en el Evangelio de Mateo, a los padres que se preparaban para el bautismo de sus hijos; “Hagan discípulos a todas las naciones, bautízalos y enséñales”. Preguntó si la práctica de presentar clases de bautismo es apropiada. Dijo: “Hoy, enseñamos a la gente para que pueda recibir el sacramento del bautismo y esperar que se convierta en discípulos. No estamos siguiendo el orden que Jesús dio a sus discípulos”. Continuó hablando con los padres sobre “ser discípulos” de Jesús.
La Nueva Evangelización promovida en el Concilio Vaticano II ha dado lugar a la importancia de la enseñanza de la fe. Es reconfortante escuchar al Papa Francisco decir que debemos abandonar la actitud de que “siempre lo hemos hecho así”.Sin embargo, a menudo el desafío más difícil es examinar algunas costumbres recientes que pueden no tener una historia tan larga como pensamos. Los misioneros a lo largo de la historia de la iglesia llevan el mensaje de Jesús a nuevos territorios de misión y experimentan formas de evangelizar nuevas culturas en la fe.
Los primeros versos del Nican Mopohua, la historia de Juan Diego y las apariciones de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe me inspiran a reflexionar sobre el método de evangelización que formó de Juan Diego un modelo para la evangelización de los pueblos indígenas. Los españoles llegaron a México en 1519 y las apariciones de Guadalupe tuvieron lugar en 1531. Los misioneros enseñaron a la gente las historias del Hijo de Dios, sufriendo la muerte por nuestra salvación, pero resucitando en Pascua dándonos la promesa de la vida eterna. Las historias de Jesús atrajeron a algunos conversos. Los conversos fueron bautizados. Juan Diego quiso saber más. Caminaba nueve millas ida y vuelta sobre las montañas los sábados para escuchar las enseñanzas de los frailes, asistir a misa el domingo y luego se iba a casa. Como nuevo católico, quería aprender más. El Papa Juan Pablo II lo llamó un “modelo de conversión indígena”.
La historia de Juan Diego corresponde exactamente al mandato de Jesús a los Apóstoles: “Hagan discípulos a todas las naciones, bautízalos y enséñales”.
La Nueva Evangelización: nueva en sus métodos, ardor y expresión
Ojalá cuando abrimos nuestras iglesias a la celebración comunitaria de la fe, que estemos abiertos al llamado de San Juan Pablo II a una Nueva Evangelización. Aceptemos la invitación del Papa Francisco “a ser audaces y creativos en esta tarea de repensar los objetivos, las estructuras, el estilo y los métodos evangelizadores”. Y mi oración es, que mi Congregación, examine “si los medios de evangelización empleados en el respectivo lugar responden a las expectativas de la Iglesia y del mundo”.

A priest read Jesus last words to his disciples in the Gospel of Matthew, to parents preparing for the baptism of their children; “Go, make disciples of all nations, baptize them and teach them.” He asked if the practice of presenting baptism classes is appropriate. He said, “Today, we teach people so that they may receive the sacrament of baptism and hope that they will become disciples. We are not following the order that Jesus gave to his disciples.” He went on to speak to the parents about “being disciples” of Jesus.
The New Evangelization promoted in the Second Vatican Council has given rise to the importance of teaching the faith. It is refreshing to hear Pope Francis say that we need to abandon the attitude that “we have always done it this way.” Yet, often the more difficult challenge is to examine some recent customs that may not have as long a history as we think. Missionaries throughout church history take the message of Jesus to new mission territories and experiment in ways of evangelizing new cultures in the faith.
The first few verses of the Nican Mopohua, the story of Juan Diego and the apparitions of Our Lady of Guadalupe inspire me to reflect on the method of evangelization that made Juan Diego a model for the evangelization of indigenous people. The Spaniard arrived in Mexico in 1519 and the Guadalupe events took place in 1531. Missionaries taught people the stories of the Son of God, suffering death for our salvation, but rising at Easter giving us the promise of eternal life. The stories of Jesus attracted a few converts. The converts were baptized. Juan Diego wanted to know more. He walked nine miles over mountains on Saturdays to hear the teaching of the Friars, attend Mass on Sunday and then went home. As a new Catholic, he wanted to learn more. Pope John Paul II called him a “model of indigenous conversion.”
The story of Juan Diego exactly corresponds to Jesus command to the Apostles, “Go, make disciples of all nations, baptize them and teach them.”
New Evangelization: new in its methods, ardor and expression
As we begin to open our churches once again to community celebration of faith, may we be open to St. John Paul II’s call to a New Evangelization. May we take on Pope Francis’ invitation “to be bold and creative in this task of rethinking the goals, structures, style and methods of evangelization.” And it is my prayer that my Congregation, “examine whether their missionary methods need to be renewed and how this should be done.”
