El Señor brilla sobre nosotros
En la primera lectura de Isaías para la fiesta de la Epifanía, es un mensaje de esperanza que se da a las personas que viven en la oscuridad de tiempos difíciles. Él dice: “Las tinieblas cubren la tierra, y espesa niebla envuelve a los pueblos; pero sobre ti resplandece el Señor”. Este año esperamos recuperarnos de un año muy difícil. Hemos experimentado “tinieblas cubriendo la tierra y espesa niebla”. Tenemos la promesa de que “el Señor nos iluminará”.
En 1968, formé parte del ministerio de San Vicente de Paul en Milwaukee. Cada miércoles por la noche, Hermano Mateo nos envió de dos en dos a una o dos familias que habían pedido ayuda de comida u otra necesidad. Una noche, Hermano Mateo nos pidió que visitáramos a una mujer que no había llamado en mucho tiempo, pero pidió la visita de los hombres. Ella no pidió nada específicamente, así que íbamos a visitarla. No sabíamos qué tan especial sería su llamada.
Berta tuvo ocho hijos. Su esposo estaba en silla de ruedas. Tuvo un accidente en el trabajo cinco años antes. Su hijo perdió ambas piernas en Vietnam. Ella nos llamó no para pedir ayuda, sino para decirnos cómo Dios la había bendecido. Un programa del gobierno para ayudar a los pobres a tener su propia casa. Ella acaba de recibir la noticia de su consejero social de que iban a tener su propia casa.
Le preguntamos cómo podía mantener su alegría con tanta tragedia a su alrededor. Dijo que todas las mañanas se arrodillaba junto a su cama y oraba para que Dios estuviera con ella y su familia durante todo el día. Cada noche, agradecía a Dios por ayudarla a pasar el día. The Lord shines upon us
In the first reading from the Isaias for the feast of the Epiphany, it is a message of hope given to people who live in the darkness of difficult times. He says, “darkness covers the earth, and thick clouds cover the peoples; but upon you the LORD shines.” This year we hope to recover from a very difficult year. We have experienced “darkness covering the earth and thick clouds.” We have the promise that “the Lord shines upon us.
In 1968, I was part of the St. Vincent de Paul ministry in Milwaukee. Each Wednesday evening, Bro. Matthew sent us out two by two to one or two households that had asked for help with food or another need. One evening, Bro. Matthew asked us to visit a woman who had not called in a long time, but asked for a visit from the men. She did not ask for anything specifically, so we were to visit her. We did not know how special her call would be.
Berta had eight children. Her husband was in a wheelchair from and accident he had at work five years earlier. Her son lost both legs in Viet Nam. She called us not to ask for help, but to tell us how God had blessed her. A governmental program to help the poor to own their own home. She just received the word from her social worker that they were going to own their own home.
We asked her how she could keep up her joy with so much tragedy around her. She said that every morning, she would kneel by her bed and pray that God be with her and her family throughout the day. Each evening, she thanked God for helping her get through her day. On this evening, we could only rejoice with her that she was to have her own home. When we returned to the Church, we told the others of the faith of Berta.
Berta truly believed that God shined down on her every day, even in the most difficult times.
