Remembering the time when Casa San Alfonso began
When Redemptorists of the St. Louis Province began the youth community of Casa San Alfonso in Denver, other Redemptorists experimented in the formation of youth communities, volunteers in mission, and the development of mission preaching teams with lay and Redemptorist members in the U.S., Canada, Central and South America, Spain, Italy, England, Ireland, Poland, Germany, the Philippines, and other nations.
I asked our North American Redemptorist archivist if he could find some of our correspondence with our Provincial about the Casa San Alfonso initiative. He asked if we coordinated our efforts with the Baltimore Province. I wrote to the archivist,
Sadly, we knew about Fr. Kevin Murray, C.SS.R. and recognized that the initiative in Philadelphia was inspired by Fr. Lasso and the 1991 General Chapter, but we were not in communication with each other. As I say this, remember that social communication was in its infancy. All the time that Casa San Alfonso was going, my computer was a Kaypro 4. Floppy discs held our data. Dial up internet was the new thing. My first email was on Juno. Increasing memory on a computer was very expensive. My connection with the Baltimore Province was as vocation director. Our theology students were in Chicago, the Baltimore students were in Washington. When we started the Casa, Oakland and St. Louis Provinces had not yet begun considering a merger. I wish that we had more communication with the Philly project, but that was not the case. We liked what we heard about their project, and I presume that they appreciated our experiment, but we were on pretty different tracks.
Technology of 1991
We did not have the advantages of social communication in those days at the Casa, but we also had freedoms in experimentation, that could have been curtailed in these days. As I think about those early days, there were no cell phones. We founded the house before AOL was formed. Casa San Alfonso began in a time before the shocking violence of the Columbine shootings, the shock of September 11, and clergy abuse scandals. Casa San Alfonso gave Redemptorists an opportunity to impact and to be impacted by the lives of migrant and immigrant young people.
