CARTA NAVIDEÑA:
“Los pastores oyeron a los ángeles”
¿Qué les dijeron los ángeles a los pastores? “No teman. Les traigo una buena noticia, que causará gran alegría a todo el pueblo.” A medida que este año llega a su fin, toda la creación quiere escuchar “buena noticia”. Hace poco tiempo, estaba enviando mensajes de texto con mis hermanas y pasamos de las malas noticias a ventilar nuestras frustraciones cuando finalmente escribí: “Basta de malas noticias. Basta de frustración. Basta de ira. De ahora en adelante, solo buenas noticias”. Ese día tomé la decisión de no ver noticias en la televisión o escucharlas en la radio. Durante el resto de Adviento, no iba a permitir que las malas noticias arruinaran mi preparación para la Navidad.
Necesitamos escuchar a los ángeles, “No teman”. Es hora de que detengamos la ira, la frustración, el racismo y el miedo al futuro. Hoy, los ángeles anuncian “buena noticia de gran alegría”. Ha nacido un niño, ha llegado una nueva vida y le da alegría a todo el mundo. Cuando el Papa Francisco escribió La alegría del Evangelio, nos recordó que el mensaje de Dios al enviar a su Hijo entre nosotros es buena noticia. Jesús dice de sí mismo que “Dios no envió a su Hijo al mundo no para condenar al mundo, sino para que el mundo se salve”. (Jn 3,17)
Este año, con toda la tristeza y el dolor que nos rodea, ha sido difícil encontrar alegría y paz al ver tales divisiones entre las personas. Hace mucho que conocemos el sufrimiento causado por el racismo y la injusticia, pero este año se desbordó. Hemos visto a los políticos volverse cada vez más partidistas y nos hemos desconectado unos de otros. Nuestras fuentes habituales de apoyo espiritual y emocional faltan porque no hemos podido compartir momentos de dolor, esperanza y alegría.
Escuchemos a los ángeles. Nos dicen que no tengamos miedo. Hay buena noticia. Un niño ha nacido. Ha venido a traer paz y alegría. Regocijémonos. Alegría para el mundo.

“The shepherds heard the angels”
What did the angels say to the shepherds? “Do not be afraid; for behold I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.” As this year comes to a close, all of creation is wanting to hear “good news.” Some time ago, I was texting with my sisters and we went from bad news, to airing our frustrations when I finally wrote, “Enough of the bad news. Enough of the frustration. Enough of the anger. From now on, only good news.” I made a decision that day to not watch news on television or to listen to it on the radio. For the rest of Advent, I was not going to let the bad news ruin my preparation for Christmas.
We need to listen to the angels, “Do not be afraid.” It is time for us to stop the anger, the frustration, the racism and the fear of the future. Today, the angels announce “good news of great joy.” A child is born, new life has come, and it gives all the world joy. When Pope Francis wrote the Joy of the Gospel, he reminded us that God’s message in sending his Son amongst us is good news. Jesus says of himself that “God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved.” (Jn 3:17)
This year, with all the sadness and heartbreak around us, it has been difficult to find joy and peace as we see such divisions amongst people. We have long known the suffering caused by racism and injustice, but this year it boiled over. We have watched politicians become more and more partisan and we have become disconnected with one another. Our normal sources of spiritual and emotional support are lacking as we have not been able to share moments of sorrow, accomplishment and joy.
Let us listen to the angels. They tell us to not be afraid. There is good news. A child is born. He has come to bring peace and joy. Let us rejoice. Joy to the World.
