Reflections for XXVIII Sunday
“My God will fully supply whatever you need,
in accord with his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.” (Ph. 4:19)
My reflection today is on the second reading from Paul’s letter to the Philippians. In good times, it is easy to give thanks to God, but having confidence that Jesus is with us in difficult times, is when our faith is tested. Trusting that God will “fully supply whatever you need,” is not always our first response. Sometimes, God comes through, to supply what we need at times when we are down. Remembering those times help when encountering a new crisis.
We began Casa San Alfonso with the help of a few friends and relatives contributing money to start our ministry. Our income was limited, but we always seemed to have what we needed during the first few months, but after five months, one evening I paid our major bills. I told my confreres that we only had $12.00 in our checking account, and we would had a couple of bills due by the end of the week. I said that we may need to ask our Provincial Superior for help to continue our ministry. We were falling behind and I lacked the confidence that “God will fully supply whatever you need.”
The next morning, Fr. Patrick came to my room with the morning mail. He said, “Look what I received from a relative in Ireland.” He gave me a check for $2,800. He also gave me three personal letters. My parents enclosed a check for $500 in their letter. A cousin sent $1,000 and my godmother sent us $1,000. From that moment on, we lived with confidence that God would supply what we need. Our ministry at Casa San Alfonso reflected the poverty of the community that we served, but we always had the resources needed to keep our house open for migrant young people.
One of the greatest joys of my work with migrants and immigrants is the confidence that the poor place in our Lord. The poor teach us much. I profess my belief that the Lord will supply all that we need, but it is in poor people that I experience true faith. It takes true faith to cross a desert or ford a river to seek a home in a new country. May God help us to receive the poor and needy in our communities of faith. And may we follow their example in faith. Let us support and encourage all to say in faith, “God will fully supply our essential needs.”

“Mi Dios suplirá todo lo que necesites, de acuerdo con sus gloriosas riquezas en Cristo Jesús”. (Fil. 4:19)
Hoy, mi reflexión es sobre la segunda lectura de la carta de Pablo a los Filipenses. En buen tiempo, es fácil dar gracias a Dios, pero tener la confianza de que Jesús está con nosotros en momentos difíciles es cuando nuestra fe se pone a prueba. Confiar en que Dios “suplirá plenamente todo lo que necesite” no es siempre nuestra primera respuesta. A veces, Dios viene para suplir lo que necesitamos en momentos en que estamos deprimidos. Recordar esos tiempos ayuda cuando se enfrenta a una nueva crisis.
Comenzamos Casa San Alfonso con la ayuda de algunos amigos y familiares que contribuyeron con dinero para comenzar nuestro ministerio. Nuestros ingresos eran limitados, pero parecía que siempre teníamos lo que necesitábamos durante los primeros meses, pero después de cinco meses, una noche pagué nuestras cuentas principales. Les dije a mis hermanos Redentoristas que solo teníamos $12.00 en la cuenta del banco y que tendríamos unas facturas vencidas al fin de la semana. Dije que es posible que necesitemos pedir ayuda a nuestro Provincial Superior para continuar nuestro ministerio. Nos estábamos quedando atrás y no tenía la confianza de que “Dios suplirá” lo que necesitamos”.
La próxima mañana, P. Patricio vino a mi habitación con el correo de la mañana. Dijo: “Mira lo que recibí de un pariente en Irlanda”. Me dio un cheque por $2.800. También me dio tres cartas personales. Mis padres incluyeron un cheque por $ 500 en su carta. Un primo envió $1,000 y mi madrina nos envió $1,000. A partir de ese momento, vivimos con la confianza de que Dios supliría lo que necesitamos. Nuestro ministerio en Casa San Alfonso nunca era rico, pero siempre tuvimos los recursos necesarios para mantener nuestra casa para los jóvenes migrantes.
Una de las mayores alegrías de mi trabajo con los migrantes y los inmigrantes es la confianza que los pobres tienen en nuestro Señor. Los pobres nos enseñan mucho. Profeso mi creencia de que el Señor suplirá todo lo que necesitamos, pero los pobres muestren a mí la fe verdadera. Se necesita verdadera fe para cruzar un desierto o un río para buscar hogar en un nuevo país. Que Dios nos ayude a recibir a los pobres y los necesitados en nuestras comunidades. Y sigamos su ejemplo con fe. Apoyemos y animemos a todos a decir con fe: “Dios suplirá plenamente nuestras necesidades esenciales”.
