Nov. 9: Founding of the Redemptorists
I am writing this blog on a special day. Today, Nov. 9, in 1732, St. Alphonsus Liguori founded the Congregation of the Fathers of the Holy Savior. Soon, the name was changed by Rome to the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer. It is interesting reading histories about that time in the life of St. Alphonsus. He began that day with five other missionaries. They initiated the community celebrating Mass with Bishop Falcoia and singing the Te Deum. The blessing felt on that day soon dissipated as they began to write a rule for the community. On Nov. 18, Brother Vitus Curzio joined and while the others did not appreciate the presence of a lay brother, Alphonsus received him warmly. Not long after the founding, the five priests who joined the congregation on Nov. 9 left the community. Alphonsus offered Brother Vitus the chance to also leave. His staying in the congregation truly marked the founding of the Redemptorists.
It was St. Alphonsus commitment to the poor and the most abandoned that motivated and inspired those who joined the community after the first five left. From the time of St. Alphonsus to this day, our Congregation is committed to the poor and the most abandoned. While defining who are the “most abandoned”, the “poor” remain a constant in so much of what we do.
The greatest blessing of my life as a Redemptorist is walking with the poor. At times, the needs of administration occupy our lives in ways that makes our external work appear separated from the charism. In seven years as vocation director, my active ministry was as an advocate for the charism of our congregation, inviting men to join us on our mission. I am grateful to those working in necessary aspects of administration, because I have been the beneficiary of their work by being free to walk with the poor.
As a son of St. Alphonsus, his life and his vision of starting a religious community of men to work for and with the most abandoned impacts my life today. At times, in a fully conscious way, I follow in his steps. At other times it is difficult to see improvement in the lives of the most abandoned. Sometimes, I am called to share my experience with the poor in order to invite others who are committed in faith to understand the lives of the most abandoned. Yet, the greatest joy is to simply be present with the poor in times of responding to the crosses in their lives or to celebrate with them the blessings received.
This morning, I received hopeful message from a family that has faced several crosses in the past few years. A man suffering from COVID came home from the hospital after thirty days on the edge of life and death. This family continues to have faith, and when a first glimpse of relief comes, the first response is to thank God. May God be with all who share the mission of the Redemptorists to serve the “most abandoned.” And, may God bless and protect all who are on the margins of church and society. Peace.

Estoy escribiendo este blog en un día especial. El 9 de noviembre de 1732, San Alfonso de Ligorio fundó la Congregación de los Padres del Santo Salvador. Pronto, Roma cambió el nombre a Congregación del Santísimo Redentor. Es interesante leer historias sobre ese momento en la vida de San Alfonso. Comenzó ese día con otros cinco misioneros. Ellos iniciaron a la comunidad celebrando la Misa con el Obispo Falcoia y cantando el Te Deum. La bendición que sintieron ese día pronto se disipó cuando comenzaron a escribir la “regla” para la comunidad. El 18 de noviembre se incorporó el hermano Vitus Curzio y, aunque los demás no apreciaron la presencia de un hermano laico, Alfonso lo recibió calurosamente. Poco después de la fundación, los cinco sacerdotes que se unieron a la congregación el 9 de noviembre abandonaron la comunidad. Alfonso le ofreció al hermano Vito la oportunidad de irse también. Su perseverancia en la congregación marcó la fundación verdadera de los Redentoristas.
Fue el compromiso de San Alfonso a los pobres y los más abandonados lo que motivó e inspiró a quienes se unieron a la comunidad después de que se fueran los primeros cinco. Desde la época de San Alfonso hasta el día de hoy, nuestra Congregación está comprometida a los pobres y los más abandonados. Al definir quiénes son los “más abandonados”, los “pobres” siguen siendo una constante en gran parte de lo que hacemos.
La mayor bendición de mi vida como Redentorista es caminar con los pobres. A veces, las necesidades de la administración ocupan nuestras vidas de tal forma que nuestro trabajo externo parece separado del carisma. En siete años como director de vocaciones, mi ministerio activo fue como defensor del carisma de nuestra congregación, invitando a hombres a unirse a nosotros en nuestra misión. Agradezco a quienes trabajan en asuntos necesarios de la administración, porque me he beneficiado de su trabajo al ser libre de caminar con los pobres.
Como hijo de San Alfonso, su vida y su visión de iniciar una comunidad religiosa para trabajar por los más abandonados impacta mi vida hoy. A veces, de manera plenamente consciente, sigo sus pasos. Otras veces es difícil ver éxito en el ministerio a los más abandonados. A veces, estoy llamado a compartir mi experiencia con los pobres para invitar a otros comprometidos en la fe a comprender la vida de los más abandonados. Sin embargo, la mayor alegría es simplemente estar presente con los pobres en los momentos de responder a las cruces en sus vidas o celebrar con ellos las bendiciones recibidas.
Esta mañana, recibí un mensaje esperanzador de una familia que ha enfrentado varias cruces en los últimos años. Un hombre que sufría de COVID regresó a casa del hospital después de treinta días al borde de la vida o la muerte. Esta familia sigue con gran fe, y cuando llega un primer destello de alivio, la primera respuesta es agradecer a Dios. Que Dios esté con todos los que comparten la misión de los Redentoristas de servir a los “más abandonados”. Y que Dios bendiga y proteja a todos los que están al margen de la iglesia y la sociedad.
