Casa San Alfonso, sirviendo a los migrantes
Fue difícil explicar la misión de Casa San Alfonso. Nuestra misión estaba fuera del esquema ordinario del ministerio de la iglesia. Fue fácil hablar de las cosas que hicimos, pero definir nuestra misión simplemente no encajaba en la mayoría de las prácticas y programas de las instituciones católicas. Los tres Redentoristas de Casa San Alfonso simplemente acompañaron a los jóvenes migrantes que vivían en el centro de la ciudad de Denver. Nuestro acompañamiento de los jóvenes incluyó muchos momentos de fe. Oramos con los jóvenes. Nos unimos a los jóvenes en sus éxitos, sus fracasos, su soledad y su alegría. Estuvimos con los jóvenes en las luchas y las tentaciones de los migrantes que intentaban sobrevivir en un país que no era el suyo. Los invitamos a retiros y proyectos misioneros. Expusimos a los jóvenes a la belleza de Dios en la naturaleza que nos rodea en Colorado. Lo más importante es que honramos la dignidad de cada joven y les dimos la bienvenida a nuestra casa.
A veces, lideran de maneras que no imaginamos. Un día, los jóvenes dijeron: “Queremos hacer algo por los pobres”. Dijeron: “Somos pobres, pero tenemos comida. Tenemos camas para dormir por la noche. Queremos ayudar a los desamparados. Queremos alimentar a los que viven debajo de los puentes”. Tenían un plan. Querían hacer burritos un día a la semana, para las personas que vivían debajo de los puentes en Denver. Los jóvenes recibieron donaciones y los martes venían a la casa después de la escuela o del trabajo para hacer burritos. Una fábrica de tortillas donó tortillas, un agricultor donó frijoles pintos y un banco de alimentos donó queso y los ingredientes para la salsa. Ponemos una olla de cinco galones de frijoles en la estufa por la mañana. Casa San Alfonso donó una olla de chile verde con carne de cerdo que preparó el Padre Miguel. Los jóvenes insistieron que yo preparé el chile verde.
Los jóvenes prepararon más de 300 burritos y salieron en grupos de dos para llevar burritos a los pobres. La primera vez, algunos sin hogar sospecharon de los burritos. La segunda semana, varios les dijeron a los jóvenes que los burritos eran los mejores que habían probado. Luego de repartir los burritos, los jóvenes regresaron a la Casa para contar las historias de las personas que conocieron. Luego rezamos Completas y recordamos a todos los que se encontraron en nuestra oración. La mejor parte de esos martes fue que la alimentación de las personas sin hogar fue totalmente iniciada por los jóvenes.

It was difficult explaining the mission of Casa San Alfonso. Our mission was out of the ordinary scheme of church ministry. It was easy to talk about things that we did, but defining our mission simply did not fit into most practices and programs of Catholic institutions. The three Redemptorists of Casa San Alfonso simply accompanied migrant youth who lived in the inner city of Denver. Our accompaniment of young people included many faith moments. We prayed with youth. We joined with youth in their successes, their failures, their loneliness and in their joy. We were with the young people in the struggles and the temptations of migrants trying to survive in country that was not their own. We invited them to retreats and mission projects. We exposed young people to God’s beauty in the nature around us in Colorado. Most importantly we honored the dignity of each youth and welcomed them into our home.
At times, they lead in ways that we did not imagine. One day, the young people said, “We want to do something for the poor.” They said, “We are poor, but we have food. We have beds to sleep in at night. We want to help the homeless. We want to feed those living under bridges.” They had a plan. They wanted to make burritos one day a week, for people living under the bridges in Denver. The young people got donations and on Tuesday’s they came to the house after school or work to make burritos. A tortilla factory donated tortillas, a farmer donated pinto beans and a food bank donated cheese and the makings for salsa. We put a five-gallon pot of beans on the stove in the morning. Casa San Alfonso donated a pot of green chile with pork that Padre Miguel prepared. The youth insisted that I prepare the chile verde.
The youth prepared 300+ burritos and went out in groups of two to take burritos to the homeless. The first time, some of the homeless people were suspicious about the burritos. The second week, several people told the youth that the burritos were the best they ever tasted. After distributing the burritos, the young people came back to the Casa to tell the stories of people whom they met. Then we prayed Compline and remembered all those whom they met in our prayer. The best part of those Tuesday evenings was that feeding the homeless was fully initiated by the youth.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
