Al entrar en la vida y el sacerdocio redentorista, quería servir a las personas al margen de la Iglesia. Mis primeros diecisiete años como sacerdote, trabajé en parroquias durante diez años y trabajo vocacional durante siete. El trabajo ordinario en las parroquias y la pastoral vocacional permitieron un contacto limitado con personas en la periferia de la vida de la Iglesia. P. Patricio y yo queríamos entrar en la vida de los jóvenes hispanos que no eran habituales en la vida de la fe católica. No sabíamos cómo llegar a los marginados. Queríamos dejar que los jóvenes entraran en nuestras vidas, pero no sabíamos si los jóvenes nos dejarían entrar en sus vidas.
Hasta que nos mudamos a la casa, Casa San Alfonso era solo una idea. El 9 de noviembre de 1991, varios miembros del grupo de jóvenes de San Jose nos ayudaron a establecer la Casa. A las 5:00 pm pedimos pizza. Después de la cena, el grupo dijo que irían a un baile de quinceañera, pero que regresarían. Nos reímos de la idea de que los jóvenes salieran de un baile para visitar a dos sacerdotes y un hermano. A las 10:30 pm, treinta jóvenes llegaron con un equipo de música, comida y bebidas. Movieron los muebles para abrir una pista de baile y comenzó una fiesta. En ese momento los jóvenes nos dieron la bienvenida a sus vidas.
Algunos piden sobre cómo trabajar con la comunidad hispana antes de conocer y amar a la gente hispana. Dijimos que CSA quise dejar que la gente entrara en nuestras vidas como Redentoristas, pero en realidad, los jóvenes nos dejaron entrar en sus vidas. CSA cambió mi vida. La variedad de misiones y ministerios en los que he trabajado durante años comenzó en Casa San Alfonso. CSA hizo mucho más por mí y Patricio de lo que esperábamos hacer por los pobres.
Cuando comenzó Casa San Alfonso, apenas comenzaba a aprender español. En la Casa aprendí español y mucho más. Escuché las historias de inmigrantes, conocí a sus familias, participé en sus prácticas de fe y me uní a sus luchas. A medida que me sentía más cómodo en el ministerio hispano, un amigo dijo: “Padre, su sangre es estadounidense y su corazón es mexicano”.
El domingo 1 de agosto celebramos la fiesta de San Alfonso. Recordamos que el profeta Isaías dijo: “El espíritu del Señor está sobre mí, porque el Señor me ha ungido; me ha enviado a traer buenas nuevas a los afligidos, a vendar a los quebrantados de corazón, a proclamar libertad a los cautivos, a liberar a los prisioneros, para anunciar un año de gracia del Señor “. (Is. 61: 1-2) El espíritu del Señor descansó sobre nosotros en Casa San Alfonso. No solo cambió la vida de muchos jóvenes; cambió la vida de los Redentoristas de la Casa.

Anuncio: Celebramos el Aniversario Treinta de la Casa San Alfonso
Invitamos a todos que participaron en la vida de Casa San Alfonso, 1991 a 1996, a una misa en la Iglesia San José en Denver, el Primero de Agosto, a las 10:00 de la mañana. Padre Miguel McAndrew, C.Ss.R. va a celebrar la misa. Hay convivio después en el parque en frente de West High School. Que vengan jóvenes de la Casa San Alfonso, sus familias. Que vengan los padrinos de la Casa que eran esencial en la vida de la casa. Que vengan padres y familiares de los jóvenes de la Casa también.
Celebra la fiesta de San Alfonso con nosotros.

Entering Redemptorist life and priesthood, I wanted to serve people on the margins of the Church. My first seventeen years as a priest, I worked in parishes for ten years and vocation work for seven. The ordinary work in parishes and vocation ministry allowed limited contact with people on the periphery of Church life. Fr. Patrick and I wanted to enter the lives of Hispanic youth who were not regulars in the life of the Catholic faith. We did not know how to reach those on the margins. We wanted to let young people into our lives, but we did not know if young people would let us into their lives.
Until we moved into the house, Casa San Alfonso was just an idea. On Nov. 9, 1991, several members of St. Joseph’s youth group helped us set up the Casa. At 5:00 pm we ordered pizza. After supper, the group said they were going to a Quinceañera dance, but they would return. We laughed at the idea of young people leaving a dance to come a visit two priests and a brother. At 10:30 pm, thirty youth came with a boom box, food and beverages. They moved the furniture to open a dance floor and a party began. In that moment the youth welcomed us into their lives.
People ask the “how to” questions of working with the Hispanic community before getting to know and love the Hispanic people. We said that CSA was to let people into our lives as Redemptorists, but in reality, the youth of CSA let us into their lives. CSA changed my life in ministry. The variety of missions and ministries that I have worked in for years began at Casa San Alfonso. CSA did much more for me and Patrick than we hoped we could do for the poor.
When Casa San Alfonso began, I was only beginning to learn Spanish. In the Casa, I learned Spanish and much more. I heard the stories of immigrants, met their families, participated in their practices of faith and joined in their struggles. As I became more comfortable in Hispanic ministry, a friend said, “Padre, su sangre es americana y su corazón es mexicano.” (Your blood is American, and your heart is Mexican.)
On Sunday, August 1, we celebrate the feast of St. Alphonsus. We remember the prophet Isaias saying, “The spirit of the Lord is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me; he has sent me to bring good news to the afflicted, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, release to prisoners, to announce a year of favor from the Lord.” (Is. 61:1-2) The spirit of the Lord rested on us at Casa San Alfonso. It not only changed the lives of many young people; it changed the lives of the Redemptorists of the Casa.

Announcement: Thirtieth Anniversary Celebration of Casa San Alfonso
We invite all who participated in the life of Casa San Alfonso, 1991 to 1996, to a mass at St. Joeseph’s Church in Denver, on August 1st, at 10:00 am. Father Mike McAndrew, C.Ss.R. will celebrate the mass. There is a potluck picnic afterwards in the park in front of West High School. Come, all who were part of our Casa San Alfonso Community. Come, Jóvenes and their families. Come padrinos and amigos de la Casa. And come, parents and relatives of the Casa San Alfonso community.
