Miguel e Inés tenían dos niños, de siete y cinco años. Dado que los dos niños eran ciudadanos estadounidenses, asumí que la dificultad extrema no debería ser difícil de probar. Me sorprendió que los niños ciudadanos tuvieran tan poca protección de ser separados de sus padres o forzados a dejar los Estados Unidos para vivir en un país que no conocían. Su oportunidad de educación sería dramáticamente limitada en el país de sus padres. Sin prueba de enfermedad o discapacidad grave que no pudiera tratarse en el país de los padres, simplemente no cumplían con los requisitos ordinarios de la ley. La bendición de la buena salud, las buenas calificaciones y la buena disposición de los niños no los ayudaron en la corte de inmigración.

Había mucha dificultad para demostrar su presencia en Estados Unidos. Tenían que demostrar su presencia durante siete años consecutivos y solo llevaban siete años y dos meses en el país. Su hijo mayor nació cinco meses después de su llegada y los primeros registros médicos no cumplieron con el requisito de siete años. Nuestro caso empezó bien. El abogado del INS comenzó por no impugnar la presencia de siete años de Miguel e Inés. Tampoco cuestionó su buen carácter. El juicio solo se basó en probar las dificultades extremas causadas a los ciudadanos estadounidenses por la deportación de Miguel e Inés.

Sabíamos que nuestro caso no dependía de lo que normalmente cumplía con la definición de dificultad extrema de la corte. Presentamos solo dos testigos, el empleador de Miguel y yo. Hablé de la importancia de crecer en medio de una familia. La deportación daría lugar a que los niños fueran separados de sus padres o tuvieran que crecer en un país totalmente ajeno a ellos. Los dos niños no tenían parientes que vivieran fuera de Estados Unidos. Durante todo mi testimonio, pensaba que el juez me detuviera y no me escuchara. No siguió con ninguna pregunta. No tenía idea de si mi testimonio ayudó o perjudicó nuestro caso.

Tras mi testimonio, el empleador de Miguel dijo que era dueño de varios restaurantes y describió a Miguel como su mejor chef. Dijo que en veinte años en el negocio de restaurantes, había empleado a más de 2.000 empleados y Miguel era su mejor empleado. Dijo: “Puede que no considere mi necesidad comercial como una dificultad extrema, pero su ausencia causará dificultades extremas para mí y los empleados que supervisa”.

Cuando el juez dio su decisión, comenzó a expresar la naturaleza inusual de nuestros argumentos. Dijo que era inusual que un sacerdote diera una súplica tan apasionada por los niños ciudadanos. Señaló que un empresario dispuesto a testificar con tanta fuerza por un empleado indocumentado era la primera vez en su corte. Años después:

Me reuní con la familia 27 años después de que ganamos el caso de inmigración. Fueron bendecidos con una niña diez años después. Los dos chicos están casados ​​y tenían muy poca memoria de la época del caso. Miguel and Ines had two boys, ages seven and five. Since the two children were U.S. citizens, I assumed that extreme hardship should not be difficult to prove. I was surprised that citizen children had so little protection of being either separated from their parents or forced to leave the U.S. to live in a country that they did not know. Their opportunity for education would be dramatically limited in the country of their parents. Without proof of serious illness or disability that could not be treated in the country of the parents, they simply did not meet the ordinary requirements of the law. The blessing of good health, good grades and the good disposition of the children were not helpful in immigration court. 

We had difficulty proving their presence in the United States. They had to demonstrate their presence for seven consecutive years, and they had only been in the country for seven years and two months. Their oldest son was born five months after their arrival and the first medical records missed the seven-year requirement. They lived with relatives for the first six months and their only income was from day labor work that they could find. We only had testimonies from friends and relatives about their presence. Then one evening at dinner, I asked them to tell the story of their first few weeks here when they talked about the baptism of a niece on their first Sunday in the United States. When I asked how they could prove that they were present, they said that they were the godparents. The baptismal certificate gave us some hope, but we did not know if it would be accepted by the court. 

The court hearing was on Jan. 6, the feast of the Epiphany. After a brief prayer, we entered the court prepared to present our best arguments for suspension of deportation for Miguel, Ines and their two boys. Our case began well. The INS lawyer began by not contesting the seven-year presence of Miguel and Ines. He also did not contest their good character.  The trial then hinged on proving extreme hardship caused to U.S. citizen/s by the deportation of Miguel and Ines. 

We knew that our case did not depend on what ordinarily met the court’s definition of extreme hardship. We presented only two witnesses, Miguel’s employer and me. I spoke of the importance of growing up in the midst of a family. Deportation would either result in the children being separated from their parents or having to grow up in a country totally foreign to them. The two children had no relatives living outside of the United States. Taking them away from the love and support of aunts, uncles and cousins would deprive these citizen children of the opportunity to thrive and deprive the American community of healthy, productive citizen children in the future. All through my testimony, I expected the judge to stop me and fail to hear me out. He did not follow up with any questions, so I had no idea if my testimony helped or hurt our case.

Following my testimony, Miguel’s employer said that he owned several restaurants and described Miguel as his best chef. He said that in twenty years in the restaurant business, he had employed over 2,000 employees and Miguel was his best employee. He said, “You may not consider my business need as extreme hardship, but his absence will cause extreme hardship for me and the employees that he supervises.”

When the judge gave his decision, he began expressing the unusual nature of our arguments for hardship. He said it was unusual to have a priest give such a passionate plea for citizen children. He noted that a businessman willing to testify so strongly for an undocumented employee was a first in his court. He granted a cancelation of removal and told Miguel and Ines that with this decision they would receive permanent residence. He said that in five years they would be eligible to become U.S. citizens, and he hoped that they would take advantage of the opportunity to become citizens.

Years later:

I met with the family 27 years after we won the immigration case. In the years since Miguel and Ines received permanent residence in the United States, they became U.S. citizens. They were blessed with a baby girl ten years later. The two boys are married, and they had very little memory of the time of the case. Their wives wanted to hear the story of Miguel and Ines’ immigration case. Ines brought out a file box with all the documentation that she saved from the preparation of the trial. She showed a letter from the lawyer written about four weeks into the case that advised them that we could not win the case. He wanted to prepare them for the likelihood that they would have to leave the country. I am not certain how well they understood the letter. I asked Ines how much pressure she felt during the four months preparing for the trial. She said, “I never felt any pressure. You told us that we were going to win.” I am glad that she had the confidence that Philip and I lacked. This case, opened the door to some very interesting relationships with “la Migra.” 

Shortly after the decision in the case of Miguel and Ines, I went to thank Mr. Joe Greene, the Director of INS for his help on the case.

Casa San Alfonso y los Servicios de Naturalización de Inmigración (INS)

No pasó mucho tiempo después de que abrimos Casa San Alfonso, sabíamos que algún día nos cruzaríamos con “la Migra” (INS). Nuestra relación fue a veces una cruz y, a veces, una bendición. El primer encuentro con “la Migra” me introdujo al mundo de los migrantes y el Derecho. También condujo a una relación única con el Director del INS en Colorado.

Tres hombres llamaron a la puerta de Miguel e Inés: un policía, un agente del FBI y un agente del INS. Era septiembre. Estaban investigando un presunto tráfico de drogas en un complejo de apartamentos. La policía y el FBI reconocieron que Inés no era un sospechoso probable tan pronto como la conocieron. Mientras se alejaban, el agente del INS preguntó si Inés estaba documentada. Inés admitió que no lo estaba. El agente le dijo que ella y su esposo debían ir a su oficina a la mañana siguiente. Después de tomar información sobre la familia y el tiempo que habían estado en los Estados Unidos, el agente les dijo que podían ser retenidos para expulsarlos del país o firmar una orden de salida voluntaria. Después de que firmaron el documento, el agente me dijo: “Parecen ser una familia muy agradable. Ayúdalos a encontrar un abogado”.

Llamé a los Servicios Católicos de Inmigración Legal en la diócesis y hablé con dos abogados. Explicaron que la familia debe demostrar presencia en el país durante siete años, buen carácter y las dificultades extremas que resultarían para un ciudadano estadounidense si fueran deportados. La parte del buen carácter fue fácil, pero la prueba de estar en el país durante siete años fue difícil y sin graves dificultades médicas para ellos o sus hijos, demostrar que las dificultades extremas eran más difíciles. Los abogados concluyeron que el caso era imposible y rechazaron a la familia. Me comuniqué con una profesora de leyes de inmigración sobre el caso, y ella también vio pocas esperanzas en seguir adelante con el caso.

Llamé al agente de inmigración. Una vez más dijo que parecían ser una buena familia y me dio el número de un bufete de abogados que podría ayudar. Un joven abogado, Philip, respondió a mi llamada. Dijo: “Nunca he trabajado en un caso de inmigración, no hablo español y no soy católico”. Me dijo que su empresa no se ocupaba de esos casos, pero que sentía curiosidad por ayudar a los inmigrantes. Dijo que, si podía encontrar a alguien que lo ayudara a entender el proceso, él representaría a la familia pro-bono.

Una vez más, llamé al agente de inmigración. Me dijo que llamara a su jefe, el Director del INS en Colorado, para pedirle consejo. Pedirle ayuda al Director del INS para defender a una familia de su propia oficina soñaba como una posibilidad bastante remota, pero llamé. Cuando fui a ver al director del INS, hablamos de que ambos habíamos estudiado en Nueva York y de cómo nos mudamos recientemente a Colorado. Finalmente, preguntó cómo podía ayudarme. Le expliqué que el abogado de Miguel e Inés necesitaba orientación sobre cómo preparar un caso de cancelación de deportación. Me habló de uno de los abogados que trabajaba para el INS, anteriormente trabajó como defensora de los inmigrantes, pero ahora formaba parte del personal del gobierno. It was not long after we opened Casa San Alfonso, we knew that one day we would cross paths with “la Migra” (INS). Our relationship was at times a cross, and at times a blessing. The first encounter with “la Migra” introduced me to the world of migrants and the Law. It also led to a unique relationship with the Director of INS in Colorado.

When “La Migra” Knocks on the Door

A complicated relationship with immigration authorities

My first encounter with “la Migra” in 1992 was surprisingly a blessing. At that time, “la Migra” was the Department of Immigration and Naturalization Services.[1] In that encounter, I walked with an immigrant family on a journey that introduced me to the complexity of immigration. Since that first encounter, I have had some amazing relationships with migrants, immigrants, immigration advocates, employers, legal representatives, and with some people in the Department of Homeland Security.

Here are a few of the people with whom I have walked.[2] 

Miguel and Ines

Three men knocked on the door of Miguel and Ines: a policeman, an FBI agent and an INS agent. It was September.  They were investigating suspected drug dealing in an apartment complex. The police and FBI recognized that Inez was not a likely suspect as soon as they met her. As they walked away, the INS agent asked if Inez was documented. Ines admitted that she was not. The agent told her that she and her husband needed to come to his office the next morning. When her husband came home from work, they called me.

Miguel and Ines thought about fleeing, but they could not imagine such a life. They asked me to go with them in the morning to visit the INS office. After taking information on the family and the length of time that they had been in the United States, the agent told them that they could be held for removal from the country or sign a voluntary departure order. With the voluntary departure order they could leave the country voluntarily in thirty days or present their situation to a judge and seek cancelation of removal. After they signed the document, the agent told me, “They appear to be a very nice family. Help them find a lawyer.”

I called Catholic Legal Immigration Services at the diocese and spoke with two lawyers. They explained that the family must prove presence in the country for seven years, good character, and extreme hardship that would result for an American citizen if they were deported. The good character part was easy, but the proof of being in the country for seven years was difficult and without grave medical hardship for them or their children, proving extreme hardship was more difficult. The lawyers concluded that the case was impossible and turned the family away. I contacted an immigration law professor about the case, and she also saw little hope in pursuing the case.

I called the immigration agent. He once again said that they appear to be a good family and he gave me the number of a law firm that might help. A young lawyer, Philip, answered my call. He said, “I have never worked on an immigration case, I do not speak Spanish and I am not Catholic.” He told me that his firm did not handle such cases, but that he was curious about helping immigrants. He said that if I could find someone to help him understand the process, he would represent the family pro bono. 

Once again, I called the immigration agent. He told me to call his boss, the Director for INS in Colorado to ask for advice. Asking the Director of INS for help with defending a family against his own office sounded like quite a long shot, but I called. When I went to see the INS Director, we talked about both of us having studied in New York and how we both recently moved to Colorado. Finally, he asked how he could help me. I explained that the lawyer for Miguel and Ines needed some guidance as to how to prepare a cancelation of removal case. He told me of one of the lawyers working for INS. She previously worked as an advocate for immigrants but now was on the government staff. He would ask her to explain the process to Philip. 

Several weeks later, I asked Philip why he took on this case. He said that his father was a minister and that if his father found out that he turned down a request from another minister for help, he would not be welcome for Thanksgiving dinner with his parents. We gathered many testimonials on the good character of both Miguel and Ines. This was the easy part of the case. We filled a large binder with the testimonials.

Padre, la piñata

Los jóvenes de Casa San Alfonso dieron energía y entusiasmo a la vida de la parroquia de San José durante nuestro primer año. Las celebraciones de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe y las Posadas involucraron a muchos jóvenes en la parroquia de San José. Celebramos las nueve noches de la Posada en la parroquia, y cada noche varios grupos parroquiales patrocinaron los convivios. Casi todas las noches había entre 100 y 200 participantes en las Posadas. Había una piñata para los niños cada noche.

Una noche, formé parte del grupo que organizaba a los niños para la piñata. Una niña, de nueve años, tenía los ojos vendados y estaba golpeando brutalmente la piñata y comenzó a alejarse de la piñata y se acercó a los niños reunidos alrededor. Grité: “Párate, párate”. Ella no me escuchó por el canto de los niños. Traté de intervenir y “BAM”, me golpeó en la cabeza con el batón. Necesita cuatro puntitos para el golpe.

Al año siguiente, me quedé lo más lejos que pude de las piñatas. Una noche, mientras yo estaba por lo menos a diez metros de distancia, un niño golpeó la piñata y soltó el batón. Todos, menos yo, lo vieron volar por el aire. Me pegó en la boca. Dos días después, tuve un labio hinchado y un ojo morado por la celebración de la Navidad. Al año siguiente, Manuel, un jugador de fútbol de West High, me dio su casco para protegerme durante las piñatas.

Padre, the piñata

The youth of Casa San Alfonso added energy and enthusiasm to life in St. Joseph’s parish during our first year. The celebrations of Our Lady of Guadalupe and the Posadas engaged many young people in their teens and twenties in the parish of St. Joseph. We celebrated all nine nights of the Posada at the parish, and each evening various parish groups sponsored the convivios. Most evenings there between 100 and 200 participants at the Posadas. There was a piñata for the children each evening.

One evening, I was part of the group organizing the children for the piñata. One girl, nine years old was blindfolded and was swinging viciously at the piñata and she began to drift away from the piñata and got close to the children gathered around. I cried out, “Stop, stop.” She did not hear me because of the singing of the little children. I tried to step in and “Bam”, she hit me in the head with the baton. I had to go get four stitches.

The following year, I stayed as far away as I could from the piñatas. One night, while I was at least thirty feet away, a boy swung at the piñata and let go of the baton. Everyone except me watched as it flew through the air. It hit me right in the mouth. For Christmas, I had a swollen lip and a black eye from the Posada celebration. The next year, Manuel a football player for West High gave me his helmet to protect me during the breaking of the piñata.

Many memories will be shared by alumni of Casa San Alfonso when we celebrate our thirtieth anniversary on the feast of St. Alphonsus, August 1, 2021.

Trabajamos en defensa de los jóvenes que en ocasiones tenían dificultades con la ley. Al inicio de Casa San Alfonso, hubo un esfuerzo iniciado por la administración del presidente George H.W. Bush para llevar a la policía a una mejor relación con las comunidades de pobreza y diversidad racial. La policía de Denver me invitó a ser socio comunitario de la policía en un proyecto llamado “Weed and Seed”. Fue una relación que fue de gran ayuda para nuestro trabajo con los jóvenes del centro de la ciudad. Los policías de Weed and Seed dedicaban varias horas a la semana a caminar por los barrios del centro de la ciudad para conocer mejor la vida de la gente de barrios pobres. Había cuatro policías involucrados en nuestro barrio, y tres de ellos se involucraron mucho con los jóvenes de la Casa para crear un clima de respeto de la juventud por la policía y de la policía por los jóvenes.

Un día, uno de los agentes pasó por la casa a tomar un café. Dijo que cuando se le pidió que formara parte del equipo de Weed and Seed, no quería participar. Estuvo en la fuerza durante ocho años y pensó que ser parte del proyecto de policía comunitaria puede negarlo su esperanza a realizar ser detective. Un día vino una mujer a la casa. Comenzó a decir que quería suicidarse. Le pregunté cómo lo haría. Quería saber si tenía un plan. Ella dijo: “Tengo una pistola”. Le dije que había venido a verme por una razón, que no quería morir, pero que no conocía otra forma. Le pregunté si me daría su arma. Ella dijo: “Está bien”. Supuse que tendríamos que ir a su casa para conseguirlo, luego metió la mano en su bolsa y sacó la pistola. Ahora se sentó a la mesa frente a mí con una pistola en sus manos. Le pedí que me la diera, y después de lo que pareció mucho tiempo, probablemente medio minuto, me dio la pistola. No sabía qué hacer y le pedí que me llamara cuando llegara a casa.

Cuando se fue, temí por ella y llamé a uno de los de Weed and Seed. Me dijo que enviaría a un trabajador de prevención de suicidios a verla en su casa. Dos oficiales fueron a la puerta y le dijeron que el P. Miguel estaba preocupado y les pidió que la revisaran. Le pidieron que los acompañara a un hospital para ser evaluada. Fue y descubrió que tenía un desequilibrio químico que le causaba depresión. Le dieron suplementos de minerales y vitaminas. Su depresión desapareció y un momento serio de su vida se convirtió en un nuevo momento de vida para ella.

Hubo varias otras ocasiones en que nuestra relación con la policía se desarrolló durante el programa Weed and Seed que nos ayudó con nuestros jóvenes.

Walking with the police

We worked in advocacy of young people who at times had difficulty with the law. At the time that we began Casa San Alfonso, there was an effort initiated by the administration of President George H.W. Bush to bring police into a better relationship with communities of poverty and racial diversity. The Police Department of Denver invited me to be a community partner with the police in a project called “Weed and Seed.” It was a relationship that was very helpful in our work with inner city youth. Police officers in the Weed and Seed units dedicated several hours a week to walking the inner-city neighborhoods to better know the lives of people in our barrio. There were four officers involved in our barrio, and three of them involved themselves enough with our young people at the Casa to create a climate of respect of youth for the police and of the police for the young people.

One morning, one of the officers stopped by the house for coffee. He said that when asked to be part of the Weed and Seed team, he was reluctant. He was on the force for eight years and thought that being part of the community police project would slow down his hope to become detective. He said that the program was the best thing that could have happened for him. Before Weed and Seed, he began to see all people as suspects and criminals. Good people were just those who had not yet been caught. Now, walking the streets, people greet him as he goes by. Some say, “Officer, you look thirsty. Would you like a glass of water.” One day he said that, while he was not supposed to accept those offers, it was a very hot day, and someone offered him cucumber water. He had never tried it before. He was curious and thirsty. He said, “Only a small glass.” Of course, the woman came out with a tall glass. He said, “Walking the beat, now I know who I am called to ‘serve and protect’.”

One day a woman came to the house. She said that she wanted to kill herself. I asked how she would do it. I wanted to know if she had a plan. She said, “I have a gun.” I told her that she came to me for a reason, that she did not want to die, but she knew of no other way. I asked if she would give me her gun. She said, “Ok.” I assumed we would go to her house to get it, then she reached into her purse and pulled out the gun. Now she sat across from the table from me with a gun in her hands. I asked her to give it to me, and after what seemed like a long time, probably half of a minute, she gave me the gun. I did not know what to do and asked her to call me when she got home.

As she left, I was afraid for her and called one of the Weed and Seed officers. He told me that he would send a suicide prevention officer to see her at her home. Two officers went to the door and told her that Fr. Mike was concerned and asked them to check on her. They asked her to go with them to a hospital to be evaluated. She went and discovered that she had a chemical imbalance that causes depression. They gave her supplements of minerals and vitamins. Her depression went away and a serious moment in her life became a new life moment for her.

There were several other times that our relationship developed with the police during the Weed and Seed program helped us with our young people.

Casa San Alfonso, sirviendo a los migrantes

Fue difícil explicar la misión de Casa San Alfonso. Nuestra misión estaba fuera del esquema ordinario del ministerio de la iglesia. Una fábrica de tortillas donó tortillas, un agricultor donó frijoles pintos y un banco de alimentos donó queso y los ingredientes para la salsa. Ponemos una olla de cinco galones de frijoles en la estufa por la mañana. Casa San Alfonso donó una olla de chile verde con carne de cerdo que preparó el Padre Miguel. Los jóvenes insistieron que yo preparé el chile verde.

Los jóvenes prepararon más de 300 burritos y salieron en grupos de dos para llevar burritos a los pobres. La primera vez, algunos sin hogar sospecharon de los burritos. La segunda semana, varios les dijeron a los jóvenes que los burritos eran los mejores que habían probado. Luego de repartir los burritos, los jóvenes regresaron a la Casa para contar las historias de las personas que conocieron. Luego rezamos Completas y recordamos a todos los que se encontraron en nuestra oración. La mejor parte de esos martes fue que la alimentación de las personas sin hogar fue totalmente iniciada por los jóvenes.

Home cooking at Casa San Alfonso

We ate well at Casa San Alfonso and we ate healthy, with some exceptions. We had a tight budget and we received some donations of food and often we took what was left over at the St. Joe’s food bank after all the poor picked over the produce. I have three short stories about our young people cooking.

Juanito wanted to prepare “tinga”. He called his mother for her recipe and she said that he need 1/2 cup of chile chipotle for a quantity of chicken. He needed to make four times his mother’s instructions for the party that we were going to celebrate. When he arrived at the store to purchase the ingredients, he thought that his note said that he needed two cups of chipotle not 1/2 cup. The Casa smelled wonderful as the chicken cooked, but it had four times the chipotle than needed. When we began eating, everyone was eager for the “tinga” that smelled so good. The first bite was a surprise for everyone. Still, there were no leftovers as we got used to the bite.

Noé wanted to make his mother’s flan. He cooked it in the evening so that it could be put in the refrigerator and we would have it the next day. He put the flan in the oven, and laid down on the sofa to read a book. He fell asleep. At 5:00 am, I woke up and smelled smoke in the house. As I passed the sofa, I woke Noé. I probably was not too nice at that moment. “What is going on?” We opened the oven, smoke billowed out and there was the flan. It looked like a hockey puck. So much for flan.

As we had a limited budget, the budget exploded for one meal. One of our young people said that he wanted to prepare a “Seven Seas” soup for a Friday of Lent. He went to the store for the seafood and when Fr. Patrick and I saw the bill, we almost fainted. It was a full week’s budget for our food. Everyone loved the meal, but meals were very meager the next week.

It was difficult to plan for how many people would show up for a meal, so we often thought that we prepared too much food, but there were seldom many leftovers and even if we thought that we had not prepared enough food, no one went hungry.

Casa San Alfonso, serving migrants

It was difficult explaining the mission of Casa San Alfonso. Our mission was out of the ordinary scheme of church ministry. It was easy to talk about things that we did, but defining our mission simply did not fit into most practices and programs of Catholic institutions. The three Redemptorists of Casa San Alfonso simply accompanied migrant youth who lived in the inner city of Denver. Our accompaniment of young people included many faith moments. We prayed with youth. We joined with youth in their successes, their failures, their loneliness and in their joy. We were with the young people in the struggles and the temptations of migrants trying to survive in country that was not their own. We invited them to retreats and mission projects. We exposed young people to God’s beauty in the nature around us in Colorado. Most importantly we honored the dignity of each youth and welcomed them into our home.

At times, they lead in ways that we did not imagine. One day, the young people said, “We want to do something for the poor.” They said, “We are poor, but we have food. We have beds to sleep in at night. We want to help the homeless. We want to feed those living under bridges.” They had a plan. They wanted to make burritos one day a week, for people living under the bridges in Denver. The young people got donations and on Tuesday’s they came to the house after school or work to make burritos. A tortilla factory donated tortillas, a farmer donated pinto beans and a food bank donated cheese and the makings for salsa. We put a five-gallon pot of beans on the stove in the morning. Casa San Alfonso donated a pot of green chile with pork that Padre Miguel prepared. The youth insisted that I prepare the chile verde.

The youth prepared 300+ burritos and went out in groups of two to take burritos to the homeless. The first time, some of the homeless people were suspicious about the burritos. The second week, several people told the youth that the burritos were the best they ever tasted. After distributing the burritos, the young people came back to the Casa to tell the stories of people whom they met. Then we prayed Compline and remembered all those whom they met in our prayer. The best part of those Tuesday evenings was that feeding the homeless was fully initiated by the youth.

La mesa

El mueble más importante de Casa San Alfonso fue la mesa. Nuestra primera mesa cabía seis personas, pero estábamos buscando una mesa más grande. No recuerdo el origen de la mesa de diez pies de largo que fue donada a nuestra casa, pero inmediatamente se convirtió en el centro del ministerio de hospitalidad de la comunidad. Acomodaba cómodamente a diez personas, pero a menudo se reunían de 12 a 15 personas para comer. La mesa se sirve para comidas, fiestas, estudio, reuniones comunitarias. Fue una gran mesa de trabajo para preparar burritos para llevar a las personas sin hogar debajo de los puentes. Cuando el clima era bonito, estábamos afuera en la mesa de picnic. La mesa fue el signo de la hospitalidad que dio la bienvenida a los jóvenes a ingresar a la comunidad.

Hospitalidad – la misión de Casa San Alfonso

La misión principal de Casa San Alfonso era la hospitalidad. En la comunidad latina, después de recibir a un invitado, lo primero que se le ofrece al invitado es comida y bebida. Antes de que pudiera llevarse a cabo algún asunto serio, uno era recibido con una invitación a comer. Al entrar por la puerta de la casa, lo primero que se encontró fue la mesa. Bienvenidos a Casa San Alfonso.

La mesa

The most important furniture in Casa San Alfonso was the table. Our first table fit six people around the table, but we were looking out for a larger table. I do not remember the origin of the ten feet long table donated to our house, but immediately it became central to the hospitality ministry of the community. It comfortably accommodated ten people, but often 12 to 15 people would gather for meals. The table served for meals, fiestas, study, community meetings. It was a great worktable for preparing burritos to take to the homeless under bridges. When the weather was nice, we were outside on a picnic table. The table was the sign of hospitality that welcomed young people to enter the community.

Hospitality – the mission of Casa San Alfonso

The primary mission of Casa San Alfonso was hospitality. In the Latino community, after the welcoming of a guest, the first things offered to the guest are food and drink. Before any serious business could take place, one was welcomed with an invitation to eat. As one entered the door of the house, the first thing encountered was the table. Welcome to Casa San Alfonso.

La capilla

La sala de la Casa San Alfonso se convirtió en nuestra capilla. Decidimos no tener muebles en la capilla. Iba a ser una sala de oración. En la parte delantera colocamos una cruz de misión redentorista. Frente a la cruz había una biblia. A la izquierda de la cruz y la Biblia había una imagen de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. A la derecha, había una imagen de San Alfonso de Liguori. Había un icono de Nuestra Madre del Perpetuo Socorro en un lugar destacado. Flores, plantas y velas decoraban el área de oración. Nos sentamos y oramos sobre cojines en el suelo. La capilla estaba adjunta al comedor, a menudo se usaba para las comidas de la multitud desbordada, ya que a menudo teníamos de diez a veinte personas o más cenando o celebrando una fiesta en la casa.

Casa San Alfonso era conocida como un lugar seguro. Los jóvenes vinieron por la amistad, el intercambio de esperanzas y sueños, el compañerismo de estar con otros luchando por saber lo que la vida les deparaba. Los Redentoristas abrieron las puertas de la casa a todo el que quisiera entrar. Siempre había alimentos saludables en la estufa o en el refrigerador. Se invitó a algunos jóvenes a vivir en la casa y ayudar con las tareas de mantenimiento de la comunidad juvenil. No sabíamos quién recibiría nuestra bienvenida, pero pronto fue obvio que muchos jóvenes recién llegados de México hicieron de Casa San Alfonso su casa. Por respeto a los Redentoristas, los jóvenes generaron las reglas de la casa. No había televisión, ya que la casa estaba destinada al compañerismo, no a un escondite. No se fumaría en la casa ni en el porche. Evitamos los refrescos para tener alimentos y bebidas saludables.

Completas – Oración nocturna

Cada actividad vespertina se detuvo a las 9:00 pm para rezar Completas. Cantamos un himno de Taizé para iniciar la oración. Completas terminaría cantando la Salve Regina. Nuestra comunidad enorgullecería a todos los Redentoristas mientras cantaban a María. La oración solo duró unos quince minutos. Los jóvenes que llegaron temprano a la casa se fueron a casa después de Completas. Algunos que llegaron a la casa más tarde porque trabajaron hasta tarde se quedaron para hablar y visitar, a menudo hasta las 11:00 pm o más tarde.

La Casa San Alfonso pudo haber sido conocida como Casa de las Fiestas, pero se convirtió en mucho más cuando la juventud la convirtió en un hogar. Oramos por la mañana por los que vivían en la casa. Los laicos de la comunidad participaron en la oración de los religiosos sin estar obligados a participar. Los jóvenes que rezaban con los religiosos de nuestra comunidad no parecían forzados, sino una parte bienvenida de la vida de Casa San Alfonso.

The chapel

The front room of Casa San Alfonso became our chapel. We decided to have practically no furniture in the room. It was to be a prayer room. At the front we placed a Redemptorist mission cross. In front of the cross there was a bible. To the left of the cross and bible was an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe. On the right, was a picture of St. Alphonsus Liguori. There was an icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help in a prominent place. Flowers, plants and candles decorated the prayer area. We sat and prayed on cushions on the floor. The chapel was attached to the dining room, it often was used for the overflow crowd for meals as we often had ten to twenty people or more dining or celebrating a fiesta at the house.

Casa San Alfonso was known as a safe place. Young people came for the friendship, the sharing of hopes and dreams, the fellowship of being with others striving to know what life had in store for them. The Redemptorists opened the doors of the house to anyone who wished to enter. There was always healthy food on the stove or in the refrigerator. Certain young men were invited to live in the house and help with the chores of maintaining the youth community. We did not know who would take up our welcome, but soon it was obvious that many recently arriving youth from Mexico made Casa San Alfonso their house. Out of respect for the Redemptorists, the young people generated the rules of the house. There was no television as the house was meant for fellowship, not a hideaway. There would be no smoking in the house or even on the porch. We avoided having sodas so as to have healthy food and drink

Completas – Night Prayer

Each evening activity stopped at 9:00 pm for praying the Night Prayer of the liturgy of hours. Singing a Taize hymn would call people to prayer. Compline would end with singing the Salve Regina. Our community would make all Redemptorists proud as they sang to Mary. The prayer only lasted about fifteen minutes. The young people who arrived early to the house went home after Compline. Some who came to the house later because of working late stayed to talk and visit, often until 11:00 pm or later.

Casa San Alfonso may have been known as Casa de las Fiestas, but it became much more as youth made it a home. We had morning prayer for those who lived in the house. The lay members of the community participated in the prayer of the religious members without being obligated to participate. The youth praying with the religious members of our community did not appear forced, but a welcome part of the life of Casa San Alfonso.

Una comunidad que confía en Dios

Cuando iniciamos Casa San Alfonso, comenzamos con donaciones de varias comunidades redentoristas y de amigos de los tres miembros fundadores de la comunidad. Pudimos cubrir nuestros gastos en los primeros días de la comunidad, pero después de varios meses, después de pagar las facturas, informé al P. Patricio que nuestra cuenta corriente se redujo a $12.00. Decidimos que al día siguiente consideraríamos pedir ayuda al Provincial.

A la mañana siguiente, el P. Patricio vino a mi cuarto y me entregó el correo. Tenía un cheque de su madre por más de $2,500. Uno de sus parientes de Irlanda envió una donación para ayudar al P. Patricio. Mis tres cartas incluían cheques de mis padres, una tía y un primo por $2,500. Nunca tuvimos que pedir ayuda a nuestro Provincial después de ese tiempo. Nuestro ministerio fue bendecido, no solo por Dios, sino por muchas personas maravillosas que apoyaron la Casa. Casa San Alfonso era un ministerio de pobreza que rara vez tenía dinero en el banco, pero nunca le faltaba lo que se necesitaba.

A community that trusts in God

When we began Casa San Alfonso, we began with donations from several Redemptorist communities and from friends of the three founding members of the community. We were able to cover our expenses in the early days of the community, but after several months, after paying bills, I informed Fr. Patrick that our checking account was down to $12.00. We decided that the next day, we would consider asking for help from the Provincial.

The next morning, Fr. Patrick came to my room, handing me my mail. He held a check from his mother for over $2,500. One of his relatives from Ireland sent a donation to help Fr. Patrick. My three letters included checks from my parents, an aunt and a cousin for $2,500. We never had to ask for help from our Provincial after that time. Our ministry was blessed, not only by God, but by many wonderful people who supported the Casa. Casa San Alfonso was a poverty ministry that rarely had money in the bank, but never lacked what was needed.

La Cruz Redentorista – No está de venta

En el verano de 1991, los Redentoristas del Norte América llevaron a cabo un Encuentro de jóvenes para redentoristas y adultos jóvenes en St. Louis. En la conferencia, el P. Juan Lasso de la Vega, el Superior General Redentorista, entregó la Cruz Redentorista a cada participante. Un grupo de jóvenes de la parroquia San José asistió al Encuentro. Cuando regresaron a Denver, los jóvenes vieron sus cruces de bronce y les preguntaron dónde podían comprar una. Decidimos adquirir alrededor de 100 cruces para el grupo de jóvenes de San José, pero decidimos no vender las cruces. Debían entregarse a quienes comenzaran a participar regularmente en las actividades del grupo de jóvenes. Cada dos o tres semanas, honramos a los jóvenes ya que asumieron la responsabilidad de las actividades del grupo. Los jóvenes iban al grupo de oración de Taizé los jueves para ver quién recibiría la siguiente cruz.

La cruz redentorista llamó la atención de los jóvenes curiosos sobre las actividades del grupo juvenil San José. Poco después de que comenzara Casa San Alfonso, una estación de radio española se enteró de Casa San Alfonso y del grupo juvenil San José. Varios de los habituales de Casa San Alfonso se sentaron para una entrevista en la estación. El reportero notó que cada joven llevaba la cruz. Julio describió a nuestro grupo de jóvenes como una pandilla. Dijo: “Las pandillas tienen sus colores. La pandilla de San José tiene la cruz. La cruz nos llama a la misión”.

La Cruz Redentorista – Not for sale

In the summer of 1991, Redemptorists of North America held a Youth Encuentro for Redemptorists and young adults in St. Louis. At the conference, Fr. Juan Lasso de la Vega, the Redemptorist Superior General, presented the Redemptorist Cross to each participant. A core group of young people from St. Joseph parish went to the Encuentro. When they returned to Denver, young people saw their bronze crosses, asked where they could buy a cross. We decided to acquire about 100 crosses for the youth group of St. Joseph’s, but we decided not to sell the crosses. They were to be given to those who began participating regularly in activities of the youth group. Every two of three weeks, we honored young people as they took responsibility for the activities of the group. Youth came to the Taize prayer goup on Thursdays to see who would get a cross next.

The Redemptorist cross gained attention from young people curious about the activities of the St. Joseph youth group. Shortly after Casa San Alfonso began, a spanish radio station became aware of Casa San Alfonso and the St. Joseph’s youth group. Several of the regulars at Casa San Alfonso sat for an interview at the station. The reporter noticed that each young person wore the cross. Julio described our youth group as a gang. He said: “Gangs have their colors. The St. Joseph’s gang has the cross. The cross calls us to mission.”

Several hundred young people received the Redemptorist cross in the first two years of Casa San Alfonso.
