A Child’s Request
We, Redemptorists, administered St. Anthony Parish from 2001 to 2008. Each summer the parish ran a summer bible school for children. We also sent our older youth to be catechists on a mission for migrant farm workers in The Dalles, Oregon. In 2006 some college students who were interested in going on the mission in Oregon, but could not spend four weeks away asked if they could do a similar mission locally. We decided to offer a summer First Communion program for children past second grade who had not yet received Eucharist. We announced that the classes would follow the regular summer bible school. Using the same three hour per day format as the Bible School, we offered a two-week program for children from 8 to 14 years old.
We held registration after Masses for two Sundays. The two-week time frame for the program was well received by parents whose jobs were marked by seasonal intensity, such as planting, harvesting and frequent travel. It was not just the migrant community that benefitted from the program. Parents of children on traveling sports teams appreciated the timing of the program. One Sunday, after parents enrolled children in the classes, one eleven-year-old child said:
“I want to sign up for the classes”
The catechist taking the registrations brought him to me. I said, “of course you can attend the classes. Ask your parents to sign you up for the class.” He said, “They won’t do it. They are divorced. Mom doesn’t go to church because she thinks she is not wanted by the church. Dad, he just doesn’t go. On the weekends that I am with my Dad, I go to church with my cousins.” I asked him why he wanted to receive the Eucharist. He said, “My cousins are servers and they go to communion. I want to be like them, and I want to serve also.” I assured him that he could come to the classes, but that I needed to talk with his Dad.
His father came to see me. I told him that his son wants to receive his First Communion. I said that I was ready to give him the Eucharist, but I needed to know what the Father wanted for his son. He said, “Father, his mother and I are having a difficult time. If our son wants to receive his First Communion, his mother and I do not want to stop him. Just don’t make us do something that we cannot do.” The child was the most engaged student in the class. He read the first reading at the Mass and his parents were among the most grateful parents that their son was so happy to receive the Eucharist.
Reflections on our summer First Communion program
Thirty-nine children entered our program. Our Director of Religious Education was skeptical of the need for an extra program outside of our regular programs. She noted that many of our farming families expressed the most gratitude, as several said that they found it difficult to bring children to classes during the school year because at times of planting and harvest, the long days of work made it difficult to bring children to town for the classes and then in the winter, we would have several snow days with classes canceled. The summer provided them an opportunity for their children to prepare outside of the intense seasons on the farms. Our DRE said that all thirty-nine children participated in every class. Perfect attendance showed the gratitude and commitment of the parents to the program.

Nosotros, los Redentoristas, administramos la Parroquia de San Antonio de 2001 a 2008. Cada verano la parroquia organizaba una escuela bíblica de verano para niños. También enviamos a unos jóvenes mayores a ser catequistas en una misión para los trabajadores agrícolas migrantes en The Dalles, Oregon. En 2006, algunos estudiantes universitarios que estaban interesados en ir a la misión en Oregon, pero que no podían pasar cuatro semanas fuera, preguntaron si podían hacer una misión similar en nuestra parroquia. Decidimos ofrecer un programa de verano de Primera Comunión para niños que pasaron el segundo grado y que aún no habían recibido la Eucaristía. Anunciamos que las clases seguirían la escuela bíblica de verano regular. Utilizando el mismo formato de tres horas por día que la Escuela Bíblica, ofrecimos un programa de dos semanas para niños de 8 a 14 años.
Llevamos inscripciones después de las misas durante dos domingos. El plazo de dos semanas para el programa fue bien recibido por los padres cuyos trabajos estaban marcados por la intensidad estacional, como la siembra, la cosecha y los viajes frecuentes. No fue solo la comunidad de migrantes la que se benefició del programa. Los padres de niños en equipos deportivos itinerantes apreciaron el tiempo del programa. Un domingo, después de que los padres inscribieran a sus hijos en las clases, un niño de once años dijo:
“Quiero inscribirme en las clases”
El catequista que llevaba las inscripciones me lo trajo. Le dije, “por supuesto que puedes asistir a las clases. Pídeles a tus padres que te inscriban en la clase”. Él dijo: “No lo harán. Están divorciados. Mamá no va a la iglesia porque cree que la iglesia no la quiere. Papá, simplemente no va. Los fines de semana que estoy con mi Papá, voy a la iglesia con mis primos “. Le pregunté por qué quería recibir la Eucaristía. Dijo: “Mis primos son monaguillos y comulgan. Yo quiero ser como ellos, y quiero servir también”. Le aseguré que podía venir a las clases, pero que necesitaba hablar con su papá.
Su padre vino a verme. Le dije que su hijo quiere recibir la Primera Comunión. Le dije que estaba listo para darle la eucaristía, pero necesitaba saber qué quería el Padre para su hijo. Dijo: “Padre, su madre y yo estamos pasando por un momento difícil. Si nuestro hijo quiere recibir su Primera Comunión, su madre y yo no queremos detenerlo. Simplemente no nos obligue a hacer algo que no podemos hacer”. El niño era el estudiante más comprometido de la clase. Él leyó la primera lectura en la misa y sus padres se encontraban entre los padres más agradecidos de que su hijo estuviera tan feliz de recibir la Eucaristía.
Reflexión sobre este programa de Primera Comunión
Treinta y nueve niños ingresaron a nuestro programa. Nuestro Director de Educación Religiosa se mostró escéptico sobre la necesidad de un programa adicional fuera de nuestros programas regulares. Señaló que muchas de nuestras familias campesinas expresaron su agradecimiento. Varias dijeron que era difícil llevar a los niños a clases durante el año escolar porque en tiempo de siembra y cosecha, fue difícil llevar sus hijos a las clases y en el invierno había días de nieve con clases canceladas. El verano les brindó una oportunidad para que sus hijos se prepararan fuera de las intensas temporadas en las granjas. Nuestro DRE dijo que los treinta y nueve niños participaron en cada clase. La asistencia perfecta demostró la gratitud y el compromiso de los padres con el programa.
