Limitaciones de la ley
He trabajado con migrantes e inmigrantes durante treinta años y, a menudo, la gente se acerca con preguntas sobre la ley de inmigración. Hay gente que dice: “No me opongo a la inmigración, pero la gente debe entrar legalmente”. Los líderes de la iglesia afirman claramente que las naciones tienen derecho a proteger sus fronteras. Con el fin de brindar seguridad, protección y justicia, las naciones crean procesos legales para la entrada de extraños a una nación. La legitimidad de crear tales leyes es un derecho de la nación. A medida que los países crean legislación, necesitamos el esfuerzo honesto de los políticos para crear leyes que sean justas y que promuevan la compasión y la seguridad de las personas que sufren. Las leyes de inmigración, aunque son legales, a menudo no son justas ni compasivas.
Estados Unidos es uno de los mayores experimentos del mundo en migración e inmigración. Durante los primeros años de esta nación, gente vino a esta nación de todo el mundo en busca de oportunidad, seguridad y libertad. La inmigración creó una nación que creó riqueza y poder de formas sin precedentes. El país se estaba expandiendo y necesitaba personas capaces de venir a Estados Unidos para participar en lo que realmente se puede llamar “el sueño americano”. Aun que no haya sido una unión perfecta, se convirtió en un modelo para la civilización.
Deberíamos estar orgullosos de nuestra herencia. La oportunidad y la promesa del Sueño Americano no han estado disponibles para todas las personas. Las injusticias y la represión de la libertad para ciertos grupos de personas tienen un lugar significativo en la historia estadounidense. La promoción de la justicia, la oportunidad y la dignidad de todas las personas ha avanzado de muchas formas contradictorias. El progreso siempre es lento y, a veces, el progreso excluye a algunas personas de los beneficios del progreso.

Limitations of Law
I have worked with migrants and immigrants for thirty years, and often people approach with questions about immigration law. People say, “I am not opposed to immigration, but people must enter legally.” Church leaders state clearly that nations have a right to protect its borders. In order to provide safety, security and justice, nations create legal processes for entry of strangers to a nation. The legitimacy of creating such laws is the right of the nation. As countries create legislation, we need the honest effort of politicians to create laws that are just and that promote compassion and security to suffering people. The laws of immigration, while legally proper often fail to be just and compassionate.
The United States is one of the world´s greatest experiments in migration and immigration. During the early years of this nation, people came to this nation from all over the world, seeking opportunity, security and freedom. Immigration created a nation that created wealth and power in unprecedented ways. The country was expanding, and it needed able people to come to America to participate in what can truly be called, “the American dream.” It may not have been a perfect union, but it became a model for civilization.
We should be proud of our heritage. The opportunity and promise of the American Dream have not been available to all people. The injustices and repression of freedom for certain groups of people has a significant place in the American story. The promotion of justice, opportunity and the dignity of all people has moved forward in many inconsistent ways. Progress always is slow and sometimes progress excludes some people from the benefits of progress.
Law is an attempt to provide justice, but often excludes people who need alternative access to justice. This is true in society, in politics and in religion. Jesus said that he did not come to abolish the law, but to fulfill the law. What he gave us was the law of love, and if you live in love, the law will be fulfilled. In many ways, it becomes unnecessary as if we live in love there will be no injustice.
