Aprender de los pobres
Ayer hablé de que el sacerdocio está al servicio del pueblo de Dios. En nuestra congregación decimos que estamos llamados a “evangelizar y ser evangelizados por los pobres”. Todos saben que un misionero debe evangelizar, pero la característica única de los Redentoristas es caminar en la vida de las personas a quienes servimos. Estoy agradecido por tener la oportunidad de trabajar con migrantes. Como sacerdote, es fácil asumir el papel de maestro, líder de una comunidad de fe. Necesitamos liderazgo en la Iglesia y maestros, pero es fácil involucrarse en la administración de las necesidades de la comunidad y no estar con las personas en las tensiones de la vida diaria y las necesidades del momento.
He tenido la suerte de recibir una educación de calidad. Nuestra formación en el seminario fue excelente. Mis experiencias en el ministerio profundizan lo que aprendí en esos años de formación en el seminario. Sin embargo, cuando comencé a trabajar con los más vulnerables de los pobres, recibí una forma de educación diferente. Aprendí que gran parte de la educación formal que recibí me brindó excelentes herramientas para el estudio y la investigación, pero sin caminar con el trabajador migrante en los campos, las empacadoras y las alegrías y luchas de sus vidas, no fui educado las cosas más importantes de la vida. Los pobres aprenden a sobrevivir en un mundo que los trata mal.
La supervivencia en tiempos difíciles enseña lo que es verdaderamente valioso. El tiempo y los horarios son menos importantes que cuidar a un ser querido que está sufriendo. Recibir la bendición de Dios lo alivia a uno del dolor de la pérdida, el dolor y la inseguridad. Quizás los pobres no pueden articular la teología, pero viven en una relación íntima con lo divino. Saben que necesitan a Dios y quieren que el sacerdote y los religiosos les asegure que son amados por Dios. Señor, ayúdanos a ser conscientes de la fe de los pobres.

Learning from the poor
Yesterday, I spoke of priesthood being of service to the people of God. In our congregation, we say that we are called “to evangelize and to be evangelized by the poor.” Everyone knows that a missionary is to evangelize, but the unique characteristic of the Redemptorists is to walk into the lives of the people whom we serve. I am grateful for having the opportunity to work with migrants. As a priest, it is easy to get into the role of being the teacher, the leader of a faith community. We need leadership in the Church and teachers, but it is easy to get involved in administration of the community needs and fail to be with people in the stresses of daily life and the needs of the moment.
I have been blessed with the opportunity to receive a quality education. Our seminary formation was top notch. My experiences in ministry deepen what I learned in those years of seminary formation. Yet, when I began working with the most vulnerable of the poor, I received a different form of education. I learned that much of the formal education that I received gave me great tools for study and research, but without walking with the hard-working migrant in fields, packing houses and in the joys and struggles of their lives, I was not educated in some of the most important things in life. The poor learn how to survive in a world that treats them poorly.
Survival in trying times teaches what is truly of value. Time and schedules are less important than caring for a loved one who is suffering. Receiving the blessing of God relieves one from the pain of loss, grief and insecurity. The poor may not be able to articulate theology, but they live in a close relationship with the divine. They know that they need God, and they want reassurance from the priest and religious that they are loved by God. Lord, help us to be aware of the faith of the poor.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
