8. Lent: Evangelization after COVID – Evangelización tras COVID
Este año, el Congreso de Educación Religiosa en Anaheim, California se ofreció en línea, en lugar de ser el espectáculo que ha sido durante 65 años. He asistido al RECongress ocho veces en los últimos veinte años. Siempre ha sido un evento espectacular. Es un evento para ver y escuchar formas creativas de ofrecer evangelización en nuestra Iglesia hoy. COVID ha tenido un impacto dramático en la vida de todos, y muchas de las presentaciones consideraron qué dirección puede tomar la evangelización “tras de COVID”. Quiero tomarme un tiempo en este blog para preparar para la vida después de COVID. Necesitamos prepararnos para una nueva normalidad. Que sea un futuro mejor.
Evangelización tras COVID
En el RECongress hubo un tema constante de esperanza para un futuro mejor después de la pandemia de Coronavirus. Cuando comenzó la pandemia, no podíamos imaginar la duración de la enfermedad y los muchos cambios que se estaban produciendo a nuestro alrededor. Esperamos un nuevo tiempo estable, con la oportunidad de reunirnos de manera segura y renovar el contacto con familiares, amigos y compañeros peregrinos en la fe.
Cada vez que asisto al RECongress, llego a casa con unos libros nuevos. Hay uno que pedí porque el autor es uno de mis favoritos y el título captura mi imaginación. Es: “Soñemos, el camino hacia un futuro mejor”, del Papa Francisco. Durante el RECongress, hubo una mezcla saludable de mirar hacia atrás y mirar hacia adelante. Muchos presentadores sacaron a relucir las buenas prácticas y momentos de avances en la evangelización, reconociendo nuestras limitaciones e incluso errores. Hubo propuestas para tomar nuevas direcciones y compartir lo que ha funcionado en el uso de plataformas digitales para la educación religiosa durante la pandemia. Sin embargo, en muchas presentaciones hubo un claro reconocimiento de que no tenemos todas las respuestas. Habrá oportunidades para nuevos métodos de evangelización que en el pasado encontrarían la resistencia de “Siempre lo hemos hecho así”.
Hace dos semanas, escribí cómo un obispo me presentó a su clero. Me pidió que ofreciera una evaluación del Ministerio Hispano en su diócesis. La forma en que me presentó a los sacerdotes facilitó mi tarea y capturó el título del libro del Papa Francisco. Les dijo a los sacerdotes: “Le pedí al Padre Miguel que me dijera las cosas buenas que estamos haciendo en el Ministerio Hispano en la diócesis y qué podemos hacer mejor”. Esta presentación positiva preparó a sacerdotes y parroquias para darme una bienvenida y entrar abiertamente en conversaciones sobre el Ministerio Hispano.
Estoy seguro que el Papa Francisco dé una presentación clara de todos los desafíos que enfrenta el mundo y la iglesia en particular. Sabemos que las soluciones a los desafíos no serán fáciles. Podemos ser misioneros de un futuro mejor para el mundo y para nuestra iglesia. Quiero reflexionar sobre formas en que podemos mejorar el futuro en las próximas reflexiones de este blog.

This year the Religious Education Congress at Anaheim, California was offered online, rather than as the major event that it has been for 65 years. I have attended the RECongress eight times in the last twenty years. It has always been a spectacular event. It is an event to see and hear creative ways to offer evangelization in our Church today. COVID has made a dramatic impact on the lives of all, and many of the presentations considered what directions evangelization may take “after COVID”. I want to take some time on this blog site to prepare for life after COVID. We need to prepare for a new normal. May it be a better future.
Evangelization after COVID
At the RECongress at Anaheim there was a consistent theme of hope for a better future in the aftermath of the Coronavirus pandemic. When the pandemic began, we could not imagine the duration of the illness and the many changes taking place around us. We look forward to a new stable time, with the opportunity to gather safely and to renew contact with family, friends and fellow sojourners in faith.
Every time that I attend the RECongress, I come home with a couple new books. There is one that I ordered because the author is a favorite of mine and the title captures my imagination. It is: “Let Us Dream, the path to a better future,” by Pope Francis. During the RECongress, there was a healthy mix of looking back and looking forward. Many presenters brought out the good practices and moments of advances in evangelization, while recognizing our limitations and even errors. There were proposals for taking new directions and sharing what has worked in using digital platforms for religious education during the pandemic. Yet, there was in many presentations a clear recognition that we do not have all the answers. There will be opportunities for new evangelization methods that in the past would meet the resistance of, “We’ve always done it this way.”
Two weeks ago, I wrote about how a bishop introduced me to his clergy. He asked me to offer an assessment of Hispanic Ministry in his diocese. The way that he presented me to the priests made my assignment easy and captured the title of Pope Francis’ book. He told the priests, “I asked Fr. Mike to tell me the good things that we are doing in Hispanic Ministry in the diocese and what we may do better.” This positive presentation prepared priests and parishes to welcome me and to openly enter conversations about Hispanic Ministry.
I expect that Pope Francis will give a clear presentation of all the challenges facing the world and the church in particular. We know that the solutions to the challenges will not be easy. We can be missionaries of the better future for the world and for our church. I look forward to reflecting on ways that we can make the future better in the next few reflections of this blog.
