22. Lent: El camino Samaritano – The Samaritan Way
Actuar de manera samaritana
La crisis de COVID presenta un desafío difícil. Aísla y separa a personas, familias, comunidades de fe, vecinos y amigos. Las máscaras, mantener la distancia social y limitar o prohibir la reunión hace difícil el cuidado de nuestro vecino. Aquellos que se preocupan profesionalmente por los demás, lo han hecho heroicamente y se han puesto en peligro. A medida que la pandemia persiste en nuestras comunidades después de un año, se hace evidente que tendremos que cuidar intencionalmente a nuestros vecinos. El Papa Francisco llama la atención sobre el ejemplo de ser vecino en la parábola del Buen Samaritano. Mientras el levita y el sacerdote se apartaban del herido, el samaritano del que no se esperaba que ayudara a un judío caído,
“se detiene, actúa, entra en el mundo del herido, vea la situación, al sufrimiento del otro, y crea así un nuevo futuro”. (pág. 3)
“Actuar de manera samaritana en una crisis significa dejarme golpeado por lo que veo, sabiendo que el sufrimiento me cambiará”. (pág. 3)
La reflexión del Papa Francisco nos llama a renovar nuestro compromiso de arriesgarnos con nuestra fe. No podemos sentarnos y esperar que otro se haga cargo de nuestro vecino. Cuando el Papa Francisco habla, no nos exige, ni nos obliga a poner nuestra fe en acción. Nos dice la verdad, que si queremos paz, alegría y confianza en que Dios está con nosotros, debemos responder.
El camino Samaritano es responder a la necesidad que tenemos ante nosotros, no por obligación, sino porque nos cambiará. Que Dios nos dé a todos el don de seguir el camino samaritano.

Act in a Samaritan way
The COVID crisis presents a very difficult challenge. It isolates and separates individuals, families, faith communities, neighbors and friends. Masks, keeping social distance and limiting or prohibiting gathering makes caring for our neighbor very difficult. Those who professionally care for others have done so heroically and placed themselves in danger. As the pandemic lingers in our communities after one year, it is becoming clear that we will need to intentionally care for our neighbors. Pope Francis calls attention to the example of being a neighbor in the parable of the Good Samaritan. While the Levite and the priest pulled away from the wounded man, the Samaritan who would not be expected to help a fallen Jewish man,
“stops, pulls up, acts, enters into the world of the wounded man, throws himself into the situation, into the other’s suffering, and so creates a new future.” (p. 3)
“To act in a Samaritan way in a crisis means letting myself be struck by what I see, knowing that the suffering will change me.” (p. 3)
Pope Francis’ reflection calls us to renew our commitment to take a chance with our faith. We cannot sit back and hope that someone else will take care of our neighbor. When Pope Francis speaks, he does not demand or oblige us to put our faith into action. He tells us the truth, that if we want peace, joy and confidence that God is with us, we need to respond.
The Samaritan way is to respond to the need before us, not out of obligation, but to do so because it will change us. May God give us all the gift to follow the Samaritan way.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
