Viernes Santo
El Viernes Santo en la comunidad hispana es un día especial. Disfruto del Vía Crucis viviente, a menudo presentado por los jóvenes de una parroquia. En una ocasión, recuerdo los comentarios de una de las mujeres de una parroquia, que después de la cuarta estación ya no veía al joven cargando la cruz como su sobrino, sino como Jesús. Después de ese Viernes Santo, siempre me he encontrado viendo al joven como Jesús. Es un momento especial cuando Jesús es bajado de la cruz.
En una ocasión celebramos la liturgia del Viernes Santo dos veces en una parroquia, una en inglés y otra en español. En el servicio en español, la lectura de la pasión tuvo lugar en una iglesia a oscuras. Se iluminó al narrador y varios jóvenes leyendo las partes de los demás participantes de la Pasión. El joven que proclamó la voz de Jesús no fue visto y leyó desde la sacristía. Se muestran dos focos en el lugar donde se colocaría la cruz. Cuando Jesús iba a ser clavado en la cruz, dos jóvenes vestidos de soldados clavaron clavos en la cruz. La cruz fue levantada y a cada lado del altar en la pared apareció una cruz de sombra. Una mujer dijo más tarde que al principio, no le gustó la voz de Jesús proveniente de un orador invisible. Al ver las tres cruces, apreció no ver a alguien que conocía en la cruz, pero podía imaginarse a Cristo ante ella.
El Viernes Santo es un día para tomarse un tiempo en silencio para reflexionar sobre la muerte de Jesús en la cruz. Que este día sea bendecido al recordar el sacrificio de Jesús por nosotros.

Good Friday
Good Friday in the Hispanic community is a special day. I enjoy the living stations of the cross, often presented by the youth of a parish. On one occasion, I remember comments from one of the women of a parish, that after the fourth station she no longer saw the youth carrying the cross as her nephew, but as Jesus. After that Good Friday, I have always found myself seeing the youth as Jesus himself. It makes for a special moment when Jesus is taken down from the cross.
On one occasion, we celebrated the liturgy of Good Friday twice in a parish, once in English and once in Spanish. In the second service in Spanish, and the reading of the passion took place in a darkened church. There was a light on the narrator and several youth read the parts of the other participants of the Passion. The youth proclaiming the voice of Jesus was unseen and read from the sacristy. Two spotlights shown on where the cross would be placed from each side of the church. When Jesus was to be nailed to the cross, two youth dressed as soldiers drove nails into the cross. The cross was raised and on each side of the altar on the wall appeared a shadow cross. A woman said later that at first, she did not like the voice of Jesus coming from an unseen speaker. On seeing the three crosses, she appreciated not seeing someone she knew on the cross, but could imagine Christ before her.
Good Friday is a day to take time in silence to reflect on Jesus’ death on the cross. May this day be blessed as we remember Jesus’ sacrifice for us.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
