2. Lent: No time for Sourpusses – No hay tiempo para una cara de vinagre
Ayer, escuchamos a Jesús decir: “No pongan cara triste”. Papa Francisco escribe: “Hay cristianos cuyas vidas parecen Cuaresma sin Pascua”. (EG 6) Dejemos que nuestro camino cuaresmal nos prepare para la Pascua.
Cuando ayunes … lávate la cara
“Cuando ustedes ayunen, no pongan cara triste, como esos hipócritas que descuidan la apariencia de su rostro, para que la gente note que están ayunando. Yo les aseguro que ya recibieron su recompensa. Tú, en cambio, cuando ayunes, perfúmate la cabeza y lávate la cara, para que no sepa la gente que estás ayunando, sino tu Padre, que está en lo secreto; y tu Padre, que ve lo secreto, te recompensará”
¿Qué ha significado la Cuaresma para ti en los últimos años? En mis 73 años, la Cuaresma ha sido un tiempo de renovación y compromiso con la fe. También ha sido alegre, ya que representa para mí, entrar en un tiempo de nueva vida. Hoy, el invierno está levantando su lado feo con la semana más fría no solo de este año, sino que me recuerda a los inviernos más fríos que he vivido. Pero cuando comienza la Cuaresma, la primavera no está lejos.
La imagen de entrar a la Cuaresma con el rostro limpio, salpicado de cenizas, en lugar de mancharse la cara, hace más significativo el pasaje del evangelio de hoy. Siempre ha sido difícil hablar del evangelio sabiendo que en pocos minutos mancharíamos la cara de los fieles. Siempre ha sido interesante ver a personas con cenizas como signo de fe durante el día, pero siempre parecía negar las palabras de Jesús. “Para que no sepa la gente que estás ayunando”.
Considere la Cuaresma como un momento para ver el mundo de manera diferente este año.
Yesterday, we heard Jesus say, “Do not look gloomy like the hypocrites.” Pope Francis writes: “There are Christians whose lives seem like Lent without Easter.” (EG 6) Let our Lenten journey prepare us for Easter.
Anoint your head and wash your face
“When you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites. They neglect their appearance, so that they may appear to others to be fasting. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that you may not appear to be fasting, except to your Father who is hidden. And your Father who sees what is hidden will repay you.”
What has Lent meant to you in past years? In my 73 years, Lent has been a time for renewal and recommitment to faith. It has also been joyful as it represents for me, entering a time of new life. Today, winter is raising its ugly side with the coldest week not only of this year, but it is reminiscent of the coldest winters that I have experienced, but when Lent begins, Spring is not far away.
The image of entering Lent with a clean face, sprinkling with ashes, rather than smudging the forehead makes more meaningful the above passage from today’s gospel. It has always been difficult to talk about the gospel knowing that in a few minutes we would smudge the foreheads of the faithful. It has always been interesting seeing people with ashes as a sign of faith through the day, but it always appeared to deny the words of Jesus. “So that you may not appear to be fasting.”
Consider Lent as a time to see the world differently this year.
Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
