Jesús, predicador itinerante
Cuando amaneció, salió Jesús y se fue a un lugar solitario. La gente se puso a buscarlo y habiéndolo encontrado no querían dejarlo partir. Pero él les dijo: “Debo anunciar también a las otras ciudades la Buena Nueva del Reino de Dios, porque para eso fui enviado”. (Lc 4, 42-43
Esta es una escritura muy especial para mí como misionero redentorista. En mi congregación he tenido el privilegio de convertirme en misionero itinerante. Trabajar con personas en movimiento ha sido mi misión durante más de treinta años. Rara vez he sido párroco, responsable de un rebaño parroquial. Cuando Jesús se sintió obligado a seguir adelante, mi apostolado con los migrantes y los inmigrantes me ha llamado a seguir adelante a menudo en mi vida. Para algunos, esta vida parece difícil, pero tengo la bendición de que los migrantes me consideren parte de su familia.
Jesús es el Buen Pastor, pero su rebaño no es una iglesia local. Él tiene que llevar la Buena Nueva a todo su rebaño. Tuvo que mudarse. Fue enviado a proclamar la Buena Nueva a todo su rebaño. Recuerde que sus discípulos fueron invitados a seguirlo. “Vengan y lo verán”. Les mostró que debían ir a todas las naciones. Mientras Jesús pasó todo su ministerio en la pequeña nación de Israel, preparó a sus Apóstoles para llevar su mensaje a todas las naciones. Después de la Resurrección, dijo a sus discípulos: “Vayan y hagan que todos los pueblos sean mis discípulos”. (Mateo 28:19)
Como misionero, he tenido la bendición de proclamar la Palabra en muchos lugares. Al moverse con frecuencia, es fácil perder el contacto con la gente. El verano pasado, tuve la oportunidad de ver a personas cuyas vidas se encontraron conmigo hace treinta años. Me sorprendió escuchar sus recuerdos de la época en que comencé a trabajar en el Ministerio Hispano en Casa San Alfonso en Denver. Cuando los dejé el verano pasado, reflexioné sobre mi vida como predicador itinerante. Me di cuenta de que es posible que no vea ni conozca a las personas que mi vida ha tocado. Simplemente confío en que la obra de Dios continuará en ellos. Estoy seguro de que Jesús los cuidará.

Jesus, Itinerant Preacher
Jesus was in Capernaum beginning his ministry, teaching and healing. At daybreak, Jesus left and went to a deserted place. The crowds went looking for him, and when they came to him, they tried to prevent him from leaving them. But he said to them, “To the other towns also I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God, because for this purpose I have been sent.” (Lk 4:42-43)
This is a very special scripture for me as a Redemptorist Missionary. I have been privileged in my congregation to become an itinerant missionary. Working with people on the move has been my mission for over thirty years. I have only rarely been a pastor, responsible for a parish flock. As Jesus felt compelled to move on, my apostolate with migrants and immigrants has called on me to move on often in my life. To some, it may appear difficult, but I am blessed that migrants consider me part of the family.
Jesus is the Good Shepherd, but his flock is not a local church. He is to bring the Good News to all of his flock. He says that he had to move. He was sent to proclaim the Good News to all of his flock. Remember that his disciples were invited to follow him. “Come and see.” He showed them that they were to go out to all nations. While Jesus spent his entire ministry in the tiny nation of Israel, he prepared his Apostles to take his message to all nations. After the Resurrection he told his disciples, “Go and make disciples of all nations.” (Mt. 28: 19)
As a missionary, I have been blessed to proclaim the Word in many places. In moving often, it is easy to lose contact with people. Last summer, I had the opportunity to see people whose lives met my life thirty years ago. It amazed me listening to their memories of the time when I began working in Hispanic Ministry at Casa San Alfonso in Denver. As I left them last summer, I reflected on my life as an itinerant preacher. I realized that I may not see or ever know the people whom my life has touched. I simply trust that God’s work will continue in them. I am certain that Jesus will care for them.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
