Padre, la piñata
Los jóvenes de Casa San Alfonso agregaron energía y entusiasmo a la vida de la parroquia de San José durante nuestro primer año. Las celebraciones de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe y las Posadas involucraron a muchos jóvenes en la parroquia de San José. Celebramos las nueve noches de la Posada en la parroquia, y cada noche varios grupos parroquiales patrocinaron los convivios. Casi todas las noches había entre 100 y 200 participantes en las Posadas. Había una piñata para los niños cada noche.
Una noche, formé parte del grupo que organizaba a los niños para la piñata. Una niña, de nueve años, tenía los ojos vendados y estaba golpeando brutalmente la piñata y comenzó a alejarse de la piñata y se acercó a los niños reunidos alrededor. Grité: “Párate, párate”. Ella no me escuchó por el canto de los niños. Traté de intervenir y “BAM”, me golpeó en la cabeza con el batón. Necesita cuatro puntitos para el golpe.
Al año siguiente, me quedé lo más lejos que pude de las piñatas. Una noche, mientras yo estaba por lo menos a diez metros de distancia, un niño golpeó la piñata y soltó el batón. Todos, menos yo, lo vieron volar por el aire. Me pegó en la boca. Dos días después, tuve un labio hinchado y un ojo morado por la celebración de la Navidad. Al año siguiente, Eddie, un jugador de fútbol de West High, me dio su casco para protegerme durante las piñatas.
Muchos alumnos de Casa San Alfonso compartirán sus recuerdos cuando celebremos nuestro trigésimo aniversario en la fiesta de San Alfonso, el 1 de agosto de 2021.

Padre, the piñata
The youth of Casa San Alfonso added energy and enthusiasm to life in St. Joseph’s parish during our first year. The celebrations of Our Lady of Guadalupe and the Posadas engaged many young people in their teens and twenties in the parish of St. Joseph. We celebrated all nine nights of the Posada at the parish, and each evening various parish groups sponsored the convivios. Most evening there between 100 and 200 participants at the Posadas. There was a piñata for the children each evening.
One evening, I was part of the group organizing the children for the piñata. One girl, nine years old was blindfolded and was swinging viciously at the piñata and she began to drift away from the piñata and got close to the children gathered around. I cried out, “Stop, stop.” She did not hear me because of the singing of the little children. I tried to step in and “Bam”, she hit me in the head with the baton. I had to go get four stitches.
The following year, I stayed as far away as I could from the piñatas. One night, while I was at least thirty feet away, a boy swung at the piñata and let go of the baton. Everyone except me watched as it flew through the air. It hit me right in the mouth. For Christmas, I had a swollen lip and a black eye from the Posada celebration. The next year, Eddie, a football player for West High gave me his helmet to protect me during the breaking of the piñata.
Many memories will be shared by alumni of Casa San Alfonso when we celebrate our thirtieth anniversary on the feast of St. Alphonsus, August 1, 2021.

Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
