Confía en los papás
Hay muchos cambios en las prácticas de las parroquias al ofrecer a los niños su Primera Eucaristía durante la pandemia de COVID. El domingo de Pascua, los niños en una parroquia recibieron su Primera Comunión. Se suponía que iban a recibir su Primera Eucaristía en mayo pasado. Al comienzo de la pandemia, la parroquia pospuso la Primera Eucaristía debido a las restricciones de asistencia a las Misas, pero esperar un año entero no es una buena práctica. La práctica ordinaria de celebrar la Primera Comunión en un grupo es buena, pero la pandemia mostró la necesidad de tener alternativas por situaciones extraordinarias.
Estamos acostumbrados a tener programas de preparación parroquial dirigidos por catequistas que preparan a los niños y jóvenes para los sacramentos. COVID ha inspirado a algunas parroquias a recordarles a los padres que ellos son “los primeros y más importantes maestros de sus hijos en la fe”. Muchos aceptaron el desafío de “educar en casa” a sus hijos en la formación religiosa. Ha ayudado a muchos padres a renovar su propia fe mientras enseñan a sus hijos.
Debemos celebrar y ayudar a los padres en la educación en casa de sus hijos. Cuando los padres le dicen a un pastor que su hijo está listo para la recepción de la Primera Eucaristía, el pastor puede y debe simplemente preguntarles la fecha en la que desean que su hijo reciba la Eucaristía. Todavía es una buena señal para una parroquia tener grupos de niños que reciban la Eucaristía un domingo determinado, pero debemos ser generosos al hacer excepciones para el beneficio de las familias que desean que este día sea especial para sus hijos.

Trust the parents
There have been many changes in the practices of parishes in offering children their First Eucharist during the COVID pandemic. On Easter Sunday, children in one parish received their First Communion. They were supposed to receive their First Eucharist last May. At the beginning of the pandemic, parishes postponed First Eucharist because of the restrictions on attendance at Masses, but waiting an entire year is not a good practice. The practice of celebrating First Eucharist in a group is good, but the pandemic has shown the need for alternatives that respond to extraordinary situations.
We are accustomed to having parish preparation programs run by catechists to prepare children and youth for the sacraments. COVID has inspired some parishes to remind parents that they are the “first and foremost teachers of their children in ways of faith.” Many parents accepted the challenge to “home school” their children in religious formation. It has helped many parents renew their own faith as they teach their children.
We should celebrate and help the parents in the home schooling of their children. When the parents tell a pastor that their child is ready for the reception of First Eucharist, the pastor can and should simply ask them for the date that they wish their child to receive the Eucharist. It is still a good sign for a parish to have groups of children receiving Eucharist on a given Sunday, but we should be generous with making exceptions for the benefit of families wanting to make this day special for their children.
